Stark's Buzzer Beater Lifts Racers On Opening Night
11/11/2016 9:39:00 AM | Men's Basketball
How can you open a basketball season with anything better than a buzzer beater for the win at home?
It doesn't get any better and the Murray State men's basketball team enjoyed it firsthand Friday when Jonathan Stark hit a 3-pointer with two seconds remaining to give the Racers a 73-70 win over the Illinois State Redbirds at the CFSB Center in Murray, Ky.
Stark's winner came after the Racers had fought back from a 62-58 hole with 2:38 to go.
The win makes the Racers 1-0 as they head out on the road for the first time in the 2016-17 season Tuesday when they take on Middle Tennessee in Murfreesboro.
Trailing 32-29 after an ISU half court buzzer shot by Keyshawn Evans, the Racers fell behind by eight less than four minutes into the second half. They rallied with four-straight 3-point baskets, two each from Terrell Miller, Jr. and Bryce Jones to take a 46-42 lead with 13:42 left.
They led 55-53 on two Stark free throws with 6:35 left, but ISU had a 9-0 run which set up the Racers' comeback win.
When the dust settled on the home opener, Miller led the Racers with 23 points on 9-of-14 shooting including 5-of-10 from 3-point range. Stark had 19 points, while MSU got 14 from Bryce Jones and 12 from Damarcus Croaker.
Game Notes
Tonight started the Racers' 92nd season of collegiate basketball.
MSU is now 55-14 all-time in season openers since the start of the OVC in 1948 and they're 65-4 during that time in home openers.
The win was MSU's first season opening win over a NCAA D-I opponent since 2010 when they defeated East Tennessee State at home. MSU had three wins in this time periods of non D-I teams Harris-Stowe (2011 & 2015) and Brescia (2012). MSU had losses at Valparaiso (2013) and at home to Houston (2014).
MSU started the game 0-of-6 from the field and shot just 32 percent in the first half. However, they rebounded with a 54 percent second half on 13-of-24 from the field.
MSU leads the all-time series with the Redbirds 3-1 with all three wins at home.
Tuesday's game at the Murphy Center at MTSU will be seen in live online streaming audio from CampusInsiders.com.
The old foes from Middle Tennessee's days in the Ohio Valley Conference renew their rivalry. The Racers lead the all-time series 103-34.
