Humphries Becomes Passing Leader In Loss To #1 JSU

Senior quarterback KD Humphries became Murray State's all-time leader in passing yards and passing touchdowns Saturday, despite his team falling to top-ranked Jacksonville State, 33-15, at Roy Stewart Stadium in Murray, Kentucky.
The Turning Point
For the first time this season it was the Racers that drew first blood, as Connor Mitchell gave his team an early 3-0 lead in the second quarter on 45-yard field goal. However, with just 17 seconds left in half, Jax State's Jamari Hester caught a 23-yard pass from Eli Jenkins to give the Gamecocks the lead at the break. Roc Thomas added six to the board for Jacksonville State in the third on a seven yard just to extend the JSU lead to 13-3 headed into the fourth quarter.
In the final stanza, JSU almost doubled its offensive output for the game by erupting for three touchdowns on 243 yards to virtually seal the win. Murray State did have two late touchdowns in the game, but it was not enough as JSU held on for the win. The loss for Murray State put an end its three-game win streak, while the win for the Gamecocks clinched at least a share of their third consecutive OVC title.
About The Gamecocks
Eli Jenkins led JSU with a season-high 261 yards with 23 completions on 44 attempts, one touchdown and two interceptions. Roc Thomas led the ground attack, which netted 274 yards for Jax State, by rushing for a career-high 165 yards and three touchdowns. Defensively, Siran Neal had a game-high 12 tackles, while Darius Jackson racked up 2.5 sacks for a total loss of 16 yards.
You're Now Tuned In To The Greatest
With 138 yards and two touchdowns, to Jordon Gandy and Mitch Stults, on Saturday, KD Humphries became Murray State's all-time leader in both passing yards and passing touchdowns, surpassing Racer great and current MSU wide receivers coach Casey Brockman. Humphries now has 10,080 yards and 72 touchdowns for his career, making him just the second OVC player in league history to surpass the 10,000 yard plateau joining EIU alum and current New England Patriot Jimmy Garoppolo as the only other player to accomplish the feat.
Got The Block On Smash
Bishop Woods tied a school record Saturday when he became just the fourth player in MSU history to record two blocks in the same game. He blocked a field goal in the second quarter and an extra point in the fourth. He now joins Zach Dean, Felton Collins and Dontrell Johnson as the only other players to come up with two blocks in a single game.
He Rocks The Club
Senior Jonathan Jackson became a member of an elite club Saturday. With five tackles on the day, he now has exactly 300 for his career. Jackson ended the day with three solo stops, two assists and a quarterback hurry.
Break Up To Make Up
After being held to a near season-low output of 178 yards on offense, the Racer defense tried its best to get things going by breaking up eight passes in the game, two of which turned into interceptions. D'Montre Wade and Zachary Wade, no relation, both had an interception and a pass breakup in the game, with D'Montre going 13 yards on his return and Zachary going 18 on his. The two Wades, along with Sean Rodriguez, led MSU in the game with nine tackles each. Greg Willard followed closely behind with a career-high eight.
I Don't Kick It, I Punt It
With 12 punts Saturday, Landon Stratton tied a nearly 20-year old MSU record for punts in a game. The last person to make 12 punts in a game was Matt Garrett in 1998 at BYU. Stratton averaged 39.4 yards per punt in the game with a long of 54, two touchbacks and he pinned the Gamecocks inside the 20-yard line on four occasions.
On To The Next One
Murray State will travel to Tennessee Tech next Saturday for the 2016 season-finale for both teams. Currently at 4-6 overall and 4-3 in league play on the year, a win on Saturday would give MSU its first unblemished OVC road record since 1996, the most total wins since 2013 and the most total OVC wins since 2011. Kickoff from Tucker Stadium in Cookeville is scheduled for 1:30 p.m.
