Racers Look to Clinch Third Consecutive OVC Title This Weekend

This Weekend
The Murray State volleyball team looks to become the sixth team in league history to win at least three consecutive OVC regular season titles this weekend as the Racers close the regular season with a pair of matches against Eastern Illinois and SIU Edwardsville. MSU currently sits a game ahead of SIU Edwardsville and two games ahead of Austin Peay in the league standings. The Racers hold the tiebreaker over APSU. The winner of the regular season crown earns the right to host the OVC Tournament next week Nov. 17-19.
Last Weekend
The Racers pushed their win streak to 10 straight as they defeated Eastern Kentucky in four sets Saturday at Racer Arena. Scottie Ingram recorded a match-high 26 kills and hit .321 in the win. Kamille Jones added 11 kills and Kristen Besselsen, Dacia Brown and Olivia Chatman all added eight kills each. Hannah Stultz tallied 56 assists on the night. EKU's win in the third set was the first time this season that the Racers have dropped a set at home.
More Player of the Week Accolades
Ingram was named the ADIDAS OVC Player of the Week for the second time this season and Stultz garnered her third OVC Setter of the Week honor on Monday in the league's weekly awards. Ingram led MSU by averaging 5.12 kills per set in MSU's two wins last week and also averaged 3.88 digs per set. Stultz meanwhile led the league with 14.5 assists per set and also averaged 2.75 digs and had three service aces for the week.
Senior Night
Saturday night's match against the Cougars will also be Senior Night at Racer Arena as five senior student-athletes will be honored prior to the match. Kristen Besselsen, Scottie Ingram, Audrey Lewis, Ellie Lorenz and Hannah Stultz will all be playing their final regular season matches at home this weekend.
Scouting Eastern Illinois
The Panthers are led on offense by Maria Brown's 253 kills this season while Josie Winner is second with 227. Brown also ranks second on EIU averaging 2.85 digs per set and is third with 19 service aces. Taylor Smith is third on the team with 196 kills and 2.82 digs per set and is second with 413 assists and has a team-best 27 aces. As a team, EIU is hitting .151 overall and is third in the league averaging 2.36 blocks per set.
Scouting SIU Edwardsville
The Cougars enter the weekend on an eight-match winning streak and sit a game behind the Racers in second place in the OVC standings. Taylor Joens leads the team averaging 2.82 kills per set while hitting .316. SIUE is balanced offensively as five other Cougars have recorded over 100 kills each on the year. Defensively, Katie Shashack leads the team averaging 4.61 digs per set and Carley Ramich leads the team at the net with 106 total blocks. In SIUE's two-setter system, Mallory Mangun and Samantha Knight have recorded 559 and 447 assists, respectively in 2016. The Cougars are hitting .199 as a team and are averaging 2.27 blocks per set.
Hometown Heroes Weekend
In honor of Veteran's Day on Nov. 11, all weekend will be Hometown Heroes Weekend at Murray State as MSU will honor those who protect and serve our country, including veterans, current military, fire fighters, police and first responders.
