As the season transitions into December, the Racers are seven games in and have produced inspiring highs and character-building lows as Matt McMahon's second edition of the Racers is 3-4 entering December.
In the SIU game, the Racers won the rebounding battle for a second-straight game and they hit a season-high 13 3-point baskets. Jonathan Stark scored a career-high 29 points and back court mate Bryce Jones hit a pair of 3-pointers to force overtime at and finished with 13 points. The Racers had a chance to win the game with 15-seconds left, but after they missed, SIU got a tip in with .08 left for the win.
The Racers were already considered a good 3-point shooting team, but so far, they're better that most thought they'd be. The Racers are eighth in NCAA D-I with an average of 11 made 3-point baskets and they rank 51st in the nation in percentage at just under 40 percent. The Racers are also valuing each possession and rank 23rd in the nation with only 11 turnovers per game.Â
Jonathan Stark is leading the way for MSU with three Ohio Valley Conference Newcomer of the Week awards (Nov. 14, 21 & 28). The junior transfer from Tulane is 15th in the nation with 3.57 made 3-pointers per game and he's 17th in the nation in total points (154 points, 22.0 ppg). Bryce Jones (13.4 ppg) combines with Stark to give MSU the best guard tandem in the OVC.
December is a big month for the Racers because at the end of it, they'll open OVC play at the CFSB Center against Tennessee State. The 11 a.m. tip on New Year's Eve morning will be televised by the CBS Sports Network.
The Racers have a four-game home winning streak dating back to last season and are 223-38 (.853) all-time in the CFSB Center in their 19th season in the building.
