Stark's 9 Threes Not Enough - Racers Fall In OT At South Dakota State
12/17/2016 2:58:00 PM | Men's Basketball
The Murray State Racers took the lead in overtime, but fell 88-84 against the South Dakota State Jackrabbits
Saturday at Frost Arena in Brookings, S.D.
Â
Jonathan Stark scored 32 points for the Racers and tied a Murray State single-game record with nine 3-point baskets.
Â
The Racers (5-7), who made a run at ending SDSU's 33-game home win streak, are back at home Thursday when they host the Wright State Raiders at the CFSB Center at 7 p.m.
Â
It was Stark's 3-pointer with 55-seconds remaining that tied the game at 72-72. After getting a defensive stop, the Racers had a chance to win the game, but Stark missed at 3-point try which sent them to their second overtime game this season.
Â
MSU took its first lead of the game when Jones was fouled on a 3-point attempt and hit all three from the free throw line for a 75-74 lead with 3:41 left. The lead grew to 79-76 on a rare four-point play by Stark when he was fouled on a 3-pointer. He made the shot and the ensuing free throw with 3:10 left. The Racers lost the lead for good with 2:34 left when SDSU's Reed Tellinghulsen made a free throw. The Racers cut the lead to 85-84 when Stark hit a 3-pointer with 26-seconds left, but MSU couldn't get another chance to either tie or take the lead.
Â
One game remains for the Racers before taking a short break for Christmas. MSU is home Thursday to host Wright State. Tip time at the CFSB Center is 7 p.m.
Â
Game Notes
The Racers tied the school record with 17 made 3-point baskets. The Racers set the record against Campbellsville in old Racer Arena with 17 threes in 1994.
Â
MSU set a new school record with 45 attempted 3-point shots, besting the 2013 record of 38 against Eastern Illinois.
Â
Stark's nine 3-point baskets tied Justin Burdine's MSU mark what he set at home against Eastern Kentucky in 2002.
Â
Stark's line read: 11-of-18 from the field including 9-of-15 from the 3-point line and 1-of-1 from the free throw line. He also had five rebounds, six assists and three steals.
Â
The game with SDSU put to bed the ESPNU BracketBusters series that ran from 2005 to 2013. The Racers owed SDSU a return game from their meeting at MSU in 2013. The Racers were 7-2 all-time in BracketBuster games and after tonight's result, finished 5-4.
Â
Stark's 30-point night was MSU's first since Jeffery Moss scored 33 against UT Martin last February.
Â
Tonight was MSU's second overtime game this season. They also played OT at Southern Illinois (Nov. 29) 89-85. MSU has lost their last two overtime games since beating SEMO on the road 94-92 in 2014
Saturday at Frost Arena in Brookings, S.D.
