Big Third Quarter Leads to Win in OVC Opener
12/31/2016 4:58:00 PM | Women's Basketball
The Murray State women went on a 30-7 run across the end of the second quarter and throughout most of the third and outscored Tennessee State 29-13 in the third period on its way to a 80-72 OVC-opening win over the Lady Tigers Saturday afternoon at the CFSB Center.
Trailing by 11 points, 34-23 with 1:16 to play in the first half, MSU (9-5, 1-0 OVC) closed the half with back-to-back baskets and trailed 34-27 heading into halftime. In the third, the Racers exploded offensively, going 8-for-13 from the floor in the quarter and led by as many as 13, 56-43 with 1:04 left to play.
The Racers led by double digits for much of the final quarter and lengthened their lead to 76-62 with 1:57 left to play. The Lady Tigers would make things interesting in the final two minutes however, cutting the Racers' lead down to 77-72 with 27 seconds remaining before MSU salted the game away with three free throws.
MSU overcame a cold shooting first half where it shot just 30 percent from the floor and 2-for-13 from 3-point range, to shoot 56.3 percent in the second half and went 4-of-8 from beyond the arc. For the game, the Racers shot 43.5 percent overall and went 6-of-21 from 3-point range. Meanwhile, TSU (5-6, 0-1 OVC) shot 46.8 percent overall and was 5-of-9 from 3-point land. The Racers had a big advantage at the free-throw line, shooting 20-of-33 at the charity stripe while the Lady Tigers hit all nine of their free throws.
For the fifth time this season a pair of Racers have scored 20 points or more in the same game as Ke'Shunan James and LeAsia Wright scored 25 and 20, respectively. James also added six rebounds and four steals in the win while Wright had a game-high five assists.
Kyra Gulledge led the Racers with 12 rebounds, including six offensively and had five blocks and three steals on the day. MSU tallied 13 steals overall and forced the Lady Tigers into 22 turnovers and scored 22 points off of those miscues.
Although the Racers got out-rebounded in the contest 40-34, MSU held a 13-11 edge in second-chance points while also outscoring the Lady Tigers 36-30 in points in the paint. MSU also had 18 fast break points to TSU's eight.
The win gives the Racers their second consecutive victory in OVC openers, both coming at home. MSU returns to action next week with a pair of road games, beginning Thursday at Jacksonville State in a 5:30 p.m., contest.
