First Pitch
The Racers open their first weekend at Reagan Field with a four-game set against Northern Illinois. MSU is coming off a 13-4 victory over Harris-Stowe in its home opener Tuesday. The Huskies began 2016 losing four games in Arizona against Boston College. This weekend will be MSU's first four-game set since 2011 vs. IPFW.
Inside the Series
The Racers and Huskies met in a doubleheader last season up in Carbondale, Ill., after the series at Reagan Field had to be moved. NIU took game one 6-4 while the Racers exploded for a then-season-high 12 runs in their 12-4 victory in game two. MSU is 5-3 all-time at Reagan Field against NIU and have never played in DeKalb.
Early Returns
Through four games this season, the Racers have been led by a quartet of newcomer transfers in Adam Bauer, Aaron Bence, Brandon Gutzler and Jack Hranec. Bence is leading MSU with a .538 batting average and seven runs while Bauer has a team-high three extra-base hits and five RBIs. Gutzler is third on the team with a .353 average and is second with three RBIs and Hranec is 1-0 as a starter, pitching five innings of shutout baseball in the Racers' season-opening victory over Bethune-Cookman. Hranec is also batting .333 at the plate.
Homestand
This weekend's series comes in the midst of Murray State's 10-game homestand over the next two weeks at Reagan Field. MSU defeated Harris-Stowe 13-4 Tuesday in the home opener. The Racers have five more home games next week against Lindenwood (Ill.), Creighton and IPFW.
Scouting Northern Illinois
The Huskies are led by Justin Fletcher's .308 batting average this season and he is one of two Huskies (Brad Wood) with an RBI so far this season. Fletcher and Tommy Hook also lead the team with two extra-base hits, both doubles, while Tony Brander has the lone triple on the year for NIU. Danny Hyde has been the Huskies' top relief pitcher so far on the young season. In two appearances and three innings of work, Hyde has allowed just one hit and struck-out two. Jason Gasser and Alex Smith have the two stolen bases this season for NIU, as a team the Huskies are just 2-of-3 on stolen base attempts. Three starters for NIU, William Anderson, Joe Hawks and Aaron Rumfield all lead the squad with six innings pitched in 2016 with Anderson and Hawks leading the way with three strikeouts each.
