Racers Shutout UTM In Series Opener

Mason Robinson posted her second complete-game shutout in as many starts Saturday, as the Murray State softball team beat UT Martin, 2-0, to open a three-game series with the Skyhawks at Racer Field in Murray.
Shelbey Miller and Brenna Fick got Murray State (20-28, 9-13 OVC) off on the right foot in the bottom of the first by drawing a walk and scratching out a bunt single to begin the frame. After both runners were moved on sacrifice bunt by Cayla Levins, the Racers took a 2-0 lead on a double from Jessica Twaddle that dropped in left center field. Maggie Glass would add a hit for MSU in the fourth, but the two runs in the first proved to be all the offense needed on the day, as Murray State held on for the 2-0 win.
The win came in large part on the back of four-hit shutout for Robinson in which she walked just one and struck out three. The solo shutout was the fifth of the season for the junior, which sets a new program single-season mark. The win also moved Robinson's season record to 15-14, marking the second consecutive season that she has won at least 15 games.
Brooke Kennedy took the loss for UT Martin, by allowing two runs on just three hits with three walks and nine strikeouts. Brooke Graham led the Skyhawks (28-22, 12-10 OVC) offensively Saturday by going 2-for-3, while Savannah Dodson and Renate Meckl also tallied hits.
Both teams will return to Racer Field Sunday to close out the series with a doubleheader at 1 p.m. Prior to the game, the four Murray State seniors on this year's team will be honored in a brief ceremony.
