This Weekend's Games
The Murray State softball team hosts UT Martin for its final three homes games of the season Saturday and Sunday at Racer Field in Murray. Prior to Sunday's single game, the Racers will honor the four seniors from this year's team: J.J. Francis, Erica Howard, Shelbey Miller and Brianne Sanders. The games also hold major postseason implications for both teams with UT Martin currently fifth in the OVC standings and Murray State holding on to the eighth and final OVC tournament spot via a tie-breaker over Belmont.
Previously On Racer Softball
The Racers picked up a 6-0 win over Western Kentucky Tuesday on the back of a two-hit shutout from pitcher Mason Robinson. Robinson carried a no-hit bid five and one-third innings until it was eventually broken up in the sixth inning on a single up the middle. Maggie Glass did the majority of the offensive damage for MSU in the win by belting a team-high fourth home run of the season to score three of her team's six runs in the contest. Glass finished the game by going 1-for-2 with a walk, two runs and three RBIs.
All-Time vs. UT Martin
The Racers swept the regular-season series with the Skyhawks for the first time in 2015 to close the gap in the all-time series at 13-9. However, the series returns to Murray this season where UTM has won each of the last three meetings and four of the six all-time contests.
Scouting The Skyhawks
UT Martin will enter the weekend at 28-21 overall and 12-9 in OVC play, which currently places them in fifth place in the league standings. The Skyhawks are coming off of a mid-week game at Memphis in which their seventh inning rally came up short and they fell, 3-2. As a team, UTM is currently hitting .261 and is led by Carly Gonzalez's .366 average. Katie Warrick follows closely behind Gonzalez at .324 and leads the team with 41 RBIs.
In the circle, Brooke Kennedy has served as the Skyhawks' ace and is currently 16-10 on the year with a 2.10 ERA, 153 strikeouts and 56 walks. As a staff, the UT Martin pitchers have a combined ERA of 2.79 and are limiting opponents to a .269 average.
Weather Forecast
Temperatures are forecasted to be in the mid-70's all weekend, although the bigger issue will be the thunderstorms forecasted each day. Winds will be moderate both day at about 9-10 mph.
I'll Do It Myself
On Tuesday at WKU, Jessica Twaddle became the first player in MSU history to turn two unassisted double plays in the same game. She has now turned four unassisted double plays in each of the past two seasons, which is also a MSU record, giving her nine for her career. The two double plays Tuesday also gave Twaddle 27 total double plays for the season, which is also an MSU single-season record.
Blanked
Mason Robinson's solo shutout Tuesday was her fourth of the season, tying the MSU single-season record. The shutout against WKU also upped her career total to nine, which ties her for the second-most all-time.
Climbing The Charts
The win of WKU Tuesday was the 40th career for pitcher Mason Robinson. She is now tied for second all-time with Shelby Kosmecki and is 17 behind leader CheyAnne Gaskey.
