The Game
Murray State will travel to Clarksville, Tennessee Saturday in search of its first win of the season. Kickoff at the newly named Fortera Stadium is schedule for 4 p.m.
Saturday's Weather
Highs in Clarskville Saturday are expected to be in the low 70's, while lows will dip into the low 50's. There is just a slight chance a rain for the game, with winds low at 2-6 mph.
Last Time Out
Jesse Hosket found Adrian Davis from 20 yards out to give Southeast Missouri a 17-16 lead with 1:05 left in regulation during Saturday night's game against the Murray State football team at Roy Stewart Stadium in Murray. Despite the late score, the Racers would drive 54 yards in five plays in less than a minute to give themselves a change at the win. However, a 38-yard field goal attempt by Connor Mitchell as time expired would be no good, allowing the Redhawks to hang on for the one-point win.
Murray State went three-and out on two fourth quarter drives with under 10 minutes to play, including one with just over four minutes remaining, to give SEMO the ball with just 2:33 left on the clock. The Redhawks then drove 58 yards in just four plays, using just 1:28 of game time to take a 17-16 lead it would never relinquish. Of his 341 total yards on Saturday, 215 of those yards came on just three plays.
The 81-yard pass to Blackburn and two 67-yard passes to Demetric Johnson, who scored on the play, and Mareio McGraw. Humphries finished the night 22-of-33 with one touchdown and no interceptions. Dylan Boone led the Murray State defense on the night with a game-high 10 tackles to go along with one interception and a pass breakup, while Jonathan Jackson and Lamont Crittendon followed with nine tackles. Crittendon had a sack for a loss of five yards, while Jackson had 1.0 tackles-for-loss for three yards, two forced fumbles, two pass breakups and a quarterback hurry. Zuri Elrington also racked up a game and career-high 2.0 sacks on the night, in addition to four tackles and a forced fumble.
The Austin Peay Series
After a stumble in Clarksville in 2014, the Racers got back on the winning track in the series last season with a 34-18 homecoming win in Murray. Murray State now holds a 35-14 all-time advantage in the series, as it heads to its 50th overall meeting. The series itself is much more even in Clarksville, where the Governors have gotten 10 of their 14 wins and MSU leads by a slim 14-10 margin.
Scouting The Governors
Despite putting up 35 points on the board Saturday, it was not enough to get by No. 18 Eastern Illinois, as the Governors fell, 56-35, in Charleston, Illinois. Jared Beard helped lead the Govs in the contest with 176 yards on 10 catches, while Kyran Moore earned OVC Specialist of the Week honors by returning the opening kick of the second half 98 yards for a touchdown. With the loss, Austin Peay falls to 0-3 on the season and 0-2 in OVC play.
Currently, APSU is allowing 51.3 points per game on the year, while scoring just 19.7. Of the 289.0 yards the Govs are averaging per game in 2016, exactly 66.0 percent, or 190.7, of those yards have come via the pass, while the other 34.0 percent, or 98.3 yards, have come courtesy of the run.
Timarious Mitchell and Tommy Hays have split time at quarterback for Austin Peay this season. Mitchell is currently averaging 125.3 yards per game, while Hays is putting up 65.3 and each currently has three touchdowns and two interceptions. The duo is also getting it done on the ground where Mitchell averages 29.7 yards per game to Hays' 26.3. Beard has been the leading target for both QBs this season with 295 yards on 19 catches and two touchdowns. Defensively, Gunnar Scholato currently leads the nation in tackles per game at 14.3 or 43 over three games.
Battle Of The Border
Saturday will be the second event in the newly announced "Battle of the Border" rivalry series between Murray State and Austin Peay. The game will be worth three points in the overall standings. The series will be based on which school can secure the majority of 67 available points (based on the 67 miles between the two institutions) through regular-season meetings and community service projects.
Leader of the Swat Team
Through four games, D'Montre Wade currently ranks second in the nation in passes defended with nine total or 2.3 per game, including eight breakups. He trails only Jordan Ferguson of Brown, who leads the FCS with 3.0 per game.
The Longest Yards
In the third quarter Saturday, KD Humphries connected with Jesse Blackburn for an 81-yard completion that set up a 1-yard rush by Tyre Gray for a touchdown. The completion is the longest since at least 1995 eclipsing 80-yard passes from Dan Lloyd to Reggie Swinton against Austin Peay in 1997 and Stewart Childress to Terrence Tillman in 2000 against Tennessee State.
Chasing History
Senior QB KD Humphries has a chance to take over as all-time leader in all four major passing categories (attempts, completions, yards and touchdowns) this season, all four of which are currently owned by current MSU WR coach, Casey Brockman. Below is a chart showing where Humphries currently is and what he needs for the record.
