Racers Strong Down Stretch at SIUE, Claim 84-77 Win
1/15/2017 3:00:00 PM | Women's Basketball
The Murray State women hit a season-high 13 3-pointers and were able to rally from a halftime deficit to win an exciting, back-and-forth contest at SIU Edwardsville Sunday, 84-77.
MSU (12-6, 4-1 OVC) was able to end the game on a 19-8 run the final 5:28 of the contest after trailing 69-65. Bria Bethea made a pair of clutch 3-pointers the final 2:49 of the contest, including one that broke a 71-71 tie. The Racers made six free throws the final 19 seconds of the game salted the win away.
Ke'Shunan James and LeAsia Wright each scored a game-high 23 points in the win and combined to go 17-for-30 from the floor, 5-of-11 from beyond the arc and 7-for-8 at the free-throw line. It marks the seventh time this season that a pair of Racers have scored 20 points or more in the same game and the sixth time this year that James and Wright have accomplished the feat.
The duo also recorded four and three assists, respectively in the game with James tallying her second consecutive double-double and third of the year as she grabbed a game-high 12 boards. Abria Gulledge chipped in with 12 points and Jasmine Borders added nine on three made 3-pointers. Taylor Reese scored five.
The Racers shot an even 50 percent from the floor in the win and hit 43 percent (13-of-30) from 3-point range. The Cougars (5-13, 1-4 OVC) shot 47.5 percent overall and made 5-of-16 (31.3 percent) from long range. SIUE was able to get a solid edge at the charity stripe as it went 16-for-24 from the line while the Racers were 11-of-15 but made its final seven of the game.
The Cougars held a 36-24 advantage in points in the paint and also had a 13-8 edge in second-chance points and out-rebounded the Racers by 10 (37-27). MSU got the scoring advantage on points off turnovers as the Racers scored 21 points off 19 SIUE turnovers. SIUE forced the Racers into 13 miscues and scored 13 on them.
The game started really strongly for the Racers as they shot nearly 63 percent in the first quarter and had a 26-21 lead after one. However, SIUE would respond in a big way and ended the first half on an 18-2 run as MSU went just 2-for-10 from the floor the final 5:39 of the half. The Racers led by as many as 12 points in the first quarter and by 11 in the second but still trailed 43-38 at the break.
MSU continues its three-game road trip as it returns to action Saturday with a 4 p.m. contest at Austin Peay.
