The Murray State Racers begin their 93rd season of men's collegiate basketball Friday (Nov. 10) when they host the season and home opener against the Brescia Bearcats. The 7 p.m. tip marks the 20th season at the CFSB Center in Murray, Kentucky. Froggy 103 (WFGS 103.7 FM) airs every MSU game with "Voice of the Racers" Neal Bradley, in his 26th season calling the action. Former MSU assistant coach Kenny Roth provides commentary. In season openers, the Racers are 55-14 in the modern era which began with the formation of the Ohio Valley Conference in 1948. Since 1990, the Racers have lost only one opener, to Houston in 2014. In home openers, the Racers are 65-4 in the modern era. Since 2009, the Racers have won 5-of-8 including a win last season over Illinois State.
Coach Matt McMahon's Racers are coming off a 98-82 exhibition win over McKendree from Nov. 2. MSU had ten players score with four in double-figures. Freshman Ja Morant netted 24 points, while junior college newcomer Shaq Buchanan tossed in 19. All-Ohio Valley Conference Jonathan Stark and Terrell Miller each tossed in 15 points.
The Racers were picked third in Ohio Valley Conference preseason poll (Oct. 24) at media day in Evansville, Ind., site of the 2018 OVC Tournament at the Ford Center. Miller and Stark were named to the All-OVC Preseason Team and Stark became the 10th Racer in the last 24 seasons to be named OVC Preseason Player of the Year.Â
This week, the Racers got some good news when Basketball Times magazine again named the Murray State Racers among the top men's programs in NCAA D-I. Since 1997, Basketball Times has revealed it's list  every five years. Murray State is among what the publication calls the "Fine Nine", a list of schools that have qualified for the list since the project started 20 years ago. The list (alphabetically) includes: Arizona, Connecticut, Duke, Kansas, Kentucky, Murray State, North Carolina, Syracuse and Xavier. The Racers are No. 32 in the ratings.
The Racers' second game of the season comes quickly on Monday when the Racers host old OVC foe Middle Tennessee at 7 p.m. at the CFSB Center. After a trip to Wright State (Nov. 18), the Racers host regional rival Southern Illinois on Thanksgiving Saturday (Nov. 25).
