Racers Best Nebraska at Qualifier; Wait For Selection Show

The third-ranked Murray State rifle team picked up a 4702-4666 win over No. 8 Nebraska Sunday at the Pat Spurgin Rifle Range in Murray, Kentucky, in the annual NCAA qualifying match for both teams.
"I thought this match went well. We were pretty consistent, once again we shot within a few points of our season averages," said head coach Alan Lollar after the match. "This is a tough match because even though we treat it like any other, it's the qualifier, it's the last match of the year, and we know it's a little different. I like that because we have the chance to learn how to handle matches surrounded by distraction. We accomplished that pretty well as a team, but need to get better.
Despite not being a squaded shooter Sunday, freshman Meike Drewell led all shooters in the match in smallbore by tying her career-high of 587. For the squaded shooters, sophomore Mackenzie Martin led the way at 586, while juniors Ivan Roe and Ben Estes followed closely at 585. Sophomore Barbara Barbara Schläpfer was next for MSU at 581, while junior Robert Broadstreet rounded out the squad at 578. In other individuals, sophomores Alathea Sellars and Eric Sloan turned in a 573, while freshman Shelbey Huber had a 570.
"Individually, Kenzie had a great match, she has been remarkably consistent lately, training well and competing hard. Ivan had another fine match," said Lollar. "It's hard to come off a big match like last week, but he did that well. Ben was a little sick last week and I'm proud of the job he did today. Barbara, Alathea and Bobby were solid and delivered good matches. Meike had a super match, along with nice jobs by Shelby and Eric. Everyone is working hard and it has been a great regular season. Now we need to get ready for the post-season."
In air rifle, Martin tied her career-best of 596 to lead the way, with Roe once again just one point behind at 595. Broadstreet and Sellars each shot a 587, while Schläpfer rounded out the squaded shooters with a 585. Drewell led the other individual shooters for Murray State with a 590, while Huber, Estes and Sloan shot a 588, 585 and a 582, respectively.
Martin led all shooters in aggregate scoring at 1182 with Roe and Drewell finishing in second and third, respectively, with an 1180 and an 1177.
Each team's NCAA qualifier score will now be averaged with their top three scores from three different locations with the top eight averages qualifying for the 2017 NCAA Rifle Championship March 10-11 in Columbus, Ohio.
The Racers will now have to wait until Wednesday at 4 p.m. for the 2017 NCAA Rifle Championship Selection Show, which will air live on NCAA.com, to see if they will be one of eight teams in the mix for a national title.
