Racers Survive Double Overtime Thriller Against TTU

The Murray State Racers (15-16) survived and won an 85-84 double overtime thriller Wednesday over the Tennessee Tech Golden Eagles in the first round of the Ohio Valley Conference Tournament at Municipal Auditorium in Nashville, Tennessee.

Jonathan Stark's 3-point basket with six seconds remaining was the difference as the junior guard set the Murray State single-game scoring mark in the OVC Tournament of 41 points. It was also the second-best scoring game in the history of the event.

Terrell Miller, Jr., and Jalen Dupree each recorded a double-double in the win. Miller had 14 points and 12 rebounds, while the freshman Dupree made his first Racer start and finished with 12 points and 11 rebounds. Bryce Jones added 12 points.

The Racers, the No. 6 seed, advance to play a second round game Thursday against the Morehead State Eagles, the No. 3 seed at 8:30 p.m.

First Half
The Racers had a poor start when they hit only two of their first 17 shot attempts, but held it together with some of their best defense of the season.

At halftime, MSU trailed only 30-29 despite shooting 28 percent (10-of-36), but held Tech to 38 percent (8-fo-21).

Second Half
MSU started the second half on a 10-3 run to get a 39-33 with 14:23 left.
Â
Jalen Dupree fouled out with 2:24 left and MSU down 60-58. Dupree had a back-to-back double-double counting his game Saturday at UTM.

With the game tied, Stark scored off his own miss for a 62-60 lead with 1:27 left.

After a Tech miss, the Racers ran the clock down but turned it over, which led to a TTU scores with 1.6 left to make it a 62-62 game.

Stark got off a long shot well beyond mid-court that missed, sending the game into overtime.

Overtime
Former Tulane teammates Kajon Mack and Jonathan Stark traded baskets until Stark's 3-pointer gave MSU a 71-70 lead with 1:26 remaining.

The Racers got the ball back with 22.4 left. Stark ran the clock down and missed a shot just inside the 3pt line and the game headed to a second OT tied 71-71.

Second Overtime
Off the opening tip, Jones drove to the hoop and scored. His free throw completed the three-point play for a 74-71 MSU lead.

Stark was fouled with :44 left and hit both free throws for an 82-81 MSU lead.

MSU fouled Curtis Phillips with 13.7 left, he missed the first free throw and made the second for an 84-82 TTU lead.

Stark drained his sixth 3-pointer of the night 6.1 left for an 85-84 lead. Tech got off a three at buzzer but it was off the mark.

With the win, the Racers break a streak of back-to-back losses to Tech and score their first win over TTU since 2015. MSU is now 11-2 against Tech in the OVC Tournament.

MSU is 12-8 in all games at the Muni and have won their 65th OVC Tournament game, which is tops in the league.

The win for the Racers snaps a nasty three-game losing streak and it's their first win since they beat SIUE at home (Feb. 16).

Going into this game, only two Racers had experience in the OVC Tournament, Bryce Jones and Gee McGhee.

Jalen Dupree made his first start as a Racer tonight. The freshman from Cordova, Tenn., ended up playing 23 minutes with 12 points, 11 rebounds and two blocked shots.

Jonathan Stark hit six 3-point baskets tonight and now has 99 in his MSU career. The all-time single-season record at MSU was set by De'Teri Mayes with 103 in the 1997-98 season.

Jonathan Stark set more than a few MSU single-game records in the OVC Tournament. His 41 points tops the scoring mark of 37 by Garrett Beshear against EKU in 1951. His 15 field goals was the best surpassing Beshear's 14 in the same 1951 game. His six 3-point baskets tied the record by Jeffery Moss that was set last season against Morehead State. He was just off the OVC record of 43 points that Austin Peay's Bubba Wells scored on Morehead State in 1997.
