Racers Come Up Short at Tech
4/14/2017 10:43:00 PM | Baseball
For the second night in a row, the Murray State offense was held in check as the Racers mustered just five hits in their 6-4 loss Friday night at Tennessee Tech.
When MSU (16-18, 6-8 OVC) did get runners on base, they failed to capitalize, going 0-for-7 with runners in scoring position and 1-of-9 with baserunners aboard.
The Golden Eagles (28-9, 15-2 OVC) were once again able to jump out to an early lead in the series with a run in the first inning on a sacrifice fly. In the top of the second, the Racers were able to tie the game at 1-1 with a sac fly of their own as Davis Sims flied out to right field, scoring Tyler Lawrence. TTU would respond however, scoring in each of the next three innings, including two runs in the bottom half of the second and in the fourth.
MSU was able to get a pair of runs in the top of the fourth as Adam Bauer scored on a balk and later in the inning, Brandon Gutzler would score on a wild pitch. The TTU pitcher had four wild pitches in the fourth inning. The Racers' final run of the game came in the sixth on a Jack Hranec RBI double to center field that brought home Lawrence for his second run of the night.
TTU's Ethan Roberts was a stopper out of the bullpen on the night as he pitched 3.1 innings of scoreless baseball and didn't allow a hit. No Racer had a multi-hit night at the plate in the loss.
Austin Dubsky took the loss in the start as he pitched just 1.1 innings and allowed three runs. Luke Brown, Tyler Horsley, Derrik Watson and Alec Whaley all made relief appearances in the game. Brown pitched 2.1 innings, allowed just one hit, and struck-out three.
The series' finale will be Saturday at 2 p.m.
