Racers To Start Season At The Eastern Illinois Opener Invitational
8/28/2017 4:29:00 PM | Men's Cross Country, Women's Cross Country
The Murray State men's and women's Cross Country squads will be back in action this September as they prepare for the EIU Opener Invitational hosted by Eastern Illinois on September 1.
"It'll be an exciting year, I like how the team has evolved. The veterans have been pushing and helping the new comers throughout camp, it's good to see the effort they've put in to get ready for the first competition". Said assistant coach Adam Kiesler.
Mark Ventura, who finished 15th in the OVC Championship last year is a name to watch for the men. His 15th place finish bested his 26th place finish the year before, finishing with a time of 25:44, he became the most recent Racer to finish in the top-15 in the OVC since Ryan Davis placed 11th in 2002.
The men's team will only feature four upper classmen, with seniors Ventura and Gavin Galanes taking the role of elder statesmen guiding a squad that had their best finish last year at the Austin Peay Fall Invitational where they finished 5th.
The women bring an experienced squad back for the 2017 season, seeing highlights such as a 4th place finish at Austin Peay, finishing 6th at the OVC championship and 20th at the NCAA race in Earlysville, VA. Seven runners competed in the NCAA meet last year, showing the depth Murray is looking to show again this year. "We have three of our top runners returning who made the OVC meet, so that experience will help". Said Kiesler
Losing Vallery Koirr, who placed in the top-15 five times along with qualifying for the NCAA meet will be tough, but returning runners such as Meagan Smith and Caroline Grogan look to push the Racers forward. Both Smith and Grogan showed impressive numbers in the OVC meet last year, as Smith finished 23rd and Grogan finished 57th.
