Last Meeting: @MSU 70, EKU 64 - February 6, 2017
The Murray State women return to action Saturday night at the CFSB Center in a pivotal contest with Eastern Kentucky at 5 p.m. Exactly halfway through the conference season, the Racers currently sit a game back of eighth place in the league standings, just behind EKU. The top eight spots in the OVC advance to the OVC Tournament in Evansville, Ind.
MSU is coming off a heartbreaking 82-80 loss on Thursday at the hands of Morehead State. Ke'Shunan James led the Racers with a game-high 34 points while Bria Bethea added 24 points. It marks the second time this season that Bethea and James have scored at least 20 or more points in the same game.
James went 16-of-34 from the floor in the loss to the Eagles. Those 34 field goal attempts set a new program record for shots in a single game, breaking the old mark of 28 held by Sheila Smith (1989) and Jennifer Parker ('94). James' 16 made field goals in the contest are tied for the third-most makes in a single game in program history and are a career-best for James.
The Racers have gotten great production from their bench the past four games ever since shifting the starting lineup to bring Bethea and Abria Gulledge in off the bench. Over the past four contests, MSU is averaging 30 points per game from its reserves while opponents are scoring eight bench points per game.
A'Queen Hayes leads Eastern Kentucky in scoring (14.8 ppg), rebounding (8.3 rpg) and assists (3.3 apg) this season and is one of three Colonels to average in double figures. Abby Wright is second on the team with 13.1 points and 5.6 boards per contest while Bria Bass is third on the team scoring 10.9 points per. Bass is the only player for EKU that has started in all 18 games.
As a team, the Colonels average just 56.7 points per game and are shooting 39 percent from the floor and 29 percent from 3-point range. EKU is 2-8 in road contests this season. Chrissy Roberts is in her 10th season as the head coach of the Colonels.
