Racers Wrap Fall Season At MSU Invitational

Murray State women's tennis wrapped up their fourth and final weekend tournament of fall, as the Racers hosted the MSU Invitational (Oct. 5-6) at Bennie Purcell Courts in Murray, Kentucky.

The Racers opened the tournament Friday taking on opponents from Belmont, Cumberland and North Alabama. Murray State found success in doubles play, going undefeated with three wins over opponents while finishing 3-3 in singles to end the day.

On Saturday, the Racers concluded doubles action going 1-2. MSU also ended the competition winning seven of eight matches in singles play. The Racers finished 4-2 in doubles and 10-4 in singles play throughout the tournament.Â

"Competing at home was a great way to wrap up our short Fall season," said MSU head tennis coach Jorge Caetano. "There were a lot of close matches over the weekend and it was great to see our girls on the winning side in most of them."

Stasya Sharapova logged an impressive stat sheet for the weekend, as she went undefeated in both singles and doubles play. The duo of Sharapova and Ana Loncarevic earned two wins in doubles matches over North Alabama and Ohio Valley Conference competitor Belmont. Likewise, Sara Loncarevic also finished unbeaten in singles for the weekend after posting three wins in matches over Belmont and Cumberland.Â

"It has been a very good fall season with a lot of tough matches and I am very proud of the way our team is competing right now. We had a lot of quality wins over the past month but I feel that the most important thing to take from this fall season is the ability that this team has to compete and battle even when things are tough and they are not playing their best tennis. This will for sure help us a lot when we get to our spring dual match season," expressed Caetano.Â

Among the Racers top performers throughout the fall season were Sara Loncarevic and Stasya Sharapova. Sara Lonecarevic finished fall with a team-best 8-2 in singles play and 6-2 in doubles play. Sharapova recorded a 6-3 record through fall singles play and was 6-2 in doubles action.Â

"Sara and Stasya played very well this Fall which makes me very happy for them especially because I know that both of them did not have a good Fall last year so seeing the improvements they have made in the past year shows that our hard work on the court is paying off," said Caetano.Â
