Racers Open 2019 With A Pair Of Wins Over Cumberland
2/3/2019 8:13:00 PM | Women's Tennis
The Murray State women's tennis team got the 2019 portion of their season going Sunday with a doubleheader sweep of the Cumberland Phoenix at the Kenlake Tennis Center in Aurora, Kentucky.
The Racers claimed a pair of 7-0 wins over the Phoenix, who entered the match ranked 19th in the nation in the NAIA Preseason Rankings.
"These matches were exactly what we needed to kick off our season," said head coach Jorge Caetano. "Cumberland is much improved from last year and some of their players caused us some trouble but I am really pleased with the way our team responded when they faced adversity. We played with a lot of energy and the double header was great to push us a little bit more in our conditioning level."
On the day, the Racers controlled the doubles point by taking five of the six matches including a pair of wins for Stasya Sharapova and Anja Loncarevic and the pair of Amina Hadzic and Sara Loncarevic.
In singles play, Sharapova, MSU's No. 1 player, won two matches that went to the third set against Cumberland's top player Ainhoa Garrido. MSU's Anja Loncarevic didn't lose a set in her two wins playing from the No. 2 slot for the Racers and Aarja Chakraborty, the No. 3 player for the Racers, also won a pair of matches in straight sets. MSU also got a pair of match wins from Jeanne Masson and Hadzic.
"Aarja and Anja played some great tennis today and I am very happy for them," Caetano added. "They have struggled with injuries that have kept them from playing to their full potential in the past and to see them dominating their opponents and playing with so much confidence is encouraging and will definitely help us moving forward with our season."
The Racers get back on the courts at Kenlake when they host Lipscomb (Feb. 8).
