The Game
The Murray State women's basketball team will play their final non-conference game of the season Friday when it takes on 10th-ranked Tennessee at Thompson-Boling Arena in Knoxville at 7 p.m. ET.
Last Time Out
Despite leading 18th-ranked Kentucky for most of the first quarter and being tied with the Wildcats at the conclusion of the stanza, the Murray State women's basketball team could not keep up with the Wildcats over the remaining three quarters and fell, 88-49, Friday at Memorial Coliseum in Lexington. The Racers led for over six minutes in the first and shooting 66.7 percent from the floor in the period. Despite the hot hand in the first, MSU cooled significantly, shooting just 30.5-percent in the second through fourth quarters to finish the game at 39.6 percent. However, despite the shots not falling after the first, the Racers did end the first half outrebounding the Wildcats, 17-14. Evelyn Adebayo was 7-for-9 from the floor in the game to lead Murray State with 20 points, to go along with a game-high nine rebounds. Brianna Crane was also big for MSU Friday, notching 13 points and eight rebounds.
The Tennessee Series
Friday will be the first ever meeting between the Racers and the Lady Vols.
Scouting The Lady Volunteers
Tennessee is currently 9-1 on the season with a win over 12th-ranked Texas and the lone blemish coming at the hands of #8 Stanford. In their last game, the Lady Vols rolled past ETSU, 80-61, on the strength of a 7-for-12 3-point shooting performance and 23 points from Meme Jackson. Tennessee currently averages 81.1 points per game, while allowing 61.7. The Lady Vols currently shoot 44.0 percent from the floor, 34.3-percent from behind the arc and 67.1-percent from the free throw line. Evina Westbrook leads UT with 16.4 points per game, while Meme Jackson and Rennia Davis follow at 14.5 and 13.8, respectively.
A Win Friday Would...
Give MSU its first win over an SEC team since 1980, when the Racers defeated Vanderbilt. Currently, MSU is 6-35 against the Southeastern Conference.
More Hardware
For the third time this season, Evelyn Adebayo was named as the OVC Newcomer of the Week. Over two games, she averaged 18.5 points and 8.5 rebounds.
Role Reversal
The Lady Vols are currently ranked 48th out of 349 teams in Division I when it comes to getting to the free throw line. However, when they get there they have trouble, shooting just 67.1 percent and ranking 209th. Conversely, MSU is the 28th best free throw shooting team in the country at 75.7 percent, but they have trouble getting to the line, ranking 231st in attempts at just 17.3 per game
OK, What's Next?
Murray State returns to the CFSB Center Jan. 3 to open OVC play against Morehead State, who currently sports the league's best record in non-conference games.
