The Murray State Racers (4-1) take to the road Saturday for a 7 p.m. tip at the Murphy Center against the Middle Tennessee State Blue Raiders (3-6) in Murfreesboro.Â
Froggy 103 (WFGS 103.7 FM) airs every MSU game with "Voice of the Racers" Neal Bradley calling the action in his 28th season. Former MSU assistant coach Kenny Roth provides commentary. Froggy103.com and GoRacers.com has free online streaming audio. The game can also be seen online at ESPN+.
After a 4-1 start, the Racers are surely to be challenged in the weeks leading up to Christmas and it starts with a game against MTSU. The meeting marks the sixth-straight season the two have met since 2013. MTSU has won the last two with the Racers' last win coming in 2014 at MTSU by a 68-49 score.
Murray State sophomore Ja Morant is coming off a week that saw him become the Ohio Valley Conference Player of the Week in back-to-back weeks. Morant scored a career-high 38 points (Nov. 26) at Alabama and 25 points at home (Dec. 1) against Prairie View A&M. Morant started the week leading the OVC in scoring at 27.2 points per game and he was third in all of NCAA D-I and he was leading the OVC with 8.4 assists per game and was also third nationally. Morant provides the Racers the rare combination of scoring, rebounding and assisting that is among the tops in the nation. He's currently one of only two players that are ranked in the top-25 nationally in scoring and assists. The other is Florida International's Brian Beard at 21.9 and 6.4.
The Racers continue to hang their hats on defense of the 3-point line as they rank first in the OVC and NCAA D-I in holding opponents to .212 percent (18-of-85). Through five games, the best any team has done in long-range shooting was Prairie View A&M last Saturday when they went 6-of-17 for 35 percent. The rest of the top-5 includes: Rhode Island (.230), VCU (.239), Santa Barbara (.245) and Brown (.252). Fellow OVC team Southeast Missouri State is 10th at .260.
The Racers are coming off an 83-67 win Saturday at home over Prairie View A&M which pushed the Racers' home winning streak at the CFSB Center to 13. MSU hasn't lost at home since last December to Auburn. The Racers' next home game (Dec. 15) will be a special day in which Coach Anderson will return so we can honor him for his great career at MSU as the Racers host the team he coached after the Racers, Jackson State.Â
After the MTSU game, the Racers stay on the road (Dec. 12) with a game in Carbondale against the Southern Illinois Salukis before coming home to host JSU and Evansville (Dec. 18).
