The Murray State Racers hit the road with a six-game winning streak packed and a share of the lead in the Ohio Valley Conference when they meet the SIUE Cougars Saturday in a 1 p.m. tip at the Vadalbene Center in Edwardsville, Illinois.
The Racers moved to 19-5 and 11-2 in the OVC Thursday after an 84-63 win over Austin Peay. Jonathan Stark (OVC Preseason Player of the Year) scored 27 points on a night when his usual 3-point shot wasn't there. He was 0-4 from long range when he hit one with 1:23 left, but proving that he is more than a great 3-point shooter, Stark scored 11 two-point field goals by slashing to the basket time after time against the Govs. Byon Hawkins scored 14 points off the bench and Terrell Miller, Jr., scored 19 points. OVC Freshman of the Year candidate Ja Morant flirted with his second triple-double this season with 11 points, 10 assists and eight rebounds.Â
Since the Racers and Cougars met for the first time this season on Dec. 30, an 87-63 win for MSU, the Racers have won 9-of-11 games. SIUE is 4-7 since the that meeting with a recent win over Jacksonville State at home (Feb. 3) 75-67. In the first meeting at MSU's home court, Stark led the way with 27 points.
Froggy 103 (WFGS 103.7 FM) airs every MSU game with "Voice of the Racers" Neal Bradley calling the action in his 27th season. Former MSU assistant coach Kenny Roth provides commentary. Froggy103.com and GoRacers.com has free online streaming audio. OVCDigitalNetwork.com has free online streaming video of all OVC games.
These two-year stars for the Racers have certainly accomplished a lot in their 57 games together. Stark has already joined the MSU 1000-Point Club and is taking aim at the MSU all-time two-year scoring mark. He enters the SIUE game with 1,217 points. He's closing on Cameron Payne (2013-15) at 1,279 and the top Racer, DT Mayes (1996-98) with 1,340. Miller is making a run at 1,000 and has 891 coming into the game at SIUE. This dynamic duo will be making their 47th consecutive start together and a total of 111 starts at SIUE.
Next week, MSU comes home for their final two regular season games at the CFSB Center as they hist Jacksonville State (Feb. 15) and Tennessee Tech (Feb. 17). It's hall of fame weekend and the 2018 class that includes MSU great Isaiah Canaan, will be inducted with a Friday night gathering and then the Saturday game will be Senior Day for the Racers.
