This Weekend
The Murray State women's basketball team kicks off its 42 season of OVC competition Thursday at home against Morehead State, followed by a Saturday clash with Eastern Kentucky.
Last Time Out
Fighting right down to the last whistle, a very game Murray State women's basketball team went toe-to-toe with the 10th-ranked Tennessee Lady Volunteers, before eventually falling to the perennial power, 98-77, Friday night at Thompson-Boling Arena in Knoxville. The Racers put up 77 points against a defense than only gave up an average of 61.7 heading into the game. Twenty of MSU's 77 point came from its best free throw effort of the season, one that saw the Racers go 20-for-23 at the charity stripe. Another key to MSU's arguably best performance of the season was its ability to force the Lady Vols into 23 turnovers, two more than committed by the Racers. Evelyn Adebayo scored a career-high 28 points as she went 10-for-18 from the floor and a perfect 7-for-7 at the free throw line. In addition, the junior transfer was 1-for-3 from 3-point range and had five rebounds, three steals and an assist. Janika-Griffith Wallace added a season-high 14 points for the Racers, while Brianna Crane notched her third-straight double-digit scoring game with 12. Lex Mayes rounded out four Racers with 10-plus points on the night with 11.
The Morehead State Series
Thursday marks the 84th meeting between Morehead State and Murray State with the Eagles holding a slim five-game advantage in the all-time series, 44-39. The Eagles have won the pat two meeting in the series, taking the last meeting between the two teams in both Morehead and Murray. In Murray, however, the Racers hold the advantage having won 23 of 39 contests at home.
Scouting The Eagles
After an impressive non-conference showing Morehead State will enter Thursday's OVC opener at 9-4, with two of the four losses coming to Top 25 teams. The Eagles are currently averaging 84.8 points per game, while allowing 69.4, and shooting 46.1 percent from the floor. Miranda Crockett currently leads the Eagles' starters with 18.8 points per game, while Aliyah Jeune comes off the bench for Morehead State and also averaged 18.8 points. Crockett also averages a team-high 6.8 rebounds per game, while Crystal Simmons-Cozar leads the away in assists per game at 4.2.
The Eastern Kentucky Series
Saturday will the 90th all-time meeting between Murray State and Eastern Kentucky, with the Colonels holding a healthy 58-31 lead. The series has not been much kinder to the Racer in Murray, where the trail, 17-28, despite winning the last two overall and home meetings.
Scouting The Colonels
After a tough non-conference slate, EKU is just 2-9 on the year with both wins coming against non-Division 1 opponents. Shooting 35.5 percent from the floor on the year, the Colonels are currently being outscored by an average of 13.0 points per game at 67.7 to 54.7. Abby Wright currently leads EKU at 12.7 points per game, while Shay Solomon follows at 10.7 to go along with a team-high 6.1 rebounds per game.
A Win Thursday Would...
Put an end to a three-game skid by the Racers. Murray State has lost its last three game with its last win coming against bethel on Dec. 13.
The Second Season
The Racers are 21-20 all-time in OVC openers and are 15-7 in those game when they are played in Murray. MSU has won its last three OVC openers and 5-4 all-time in conference lid lifters against Morehead State.

On Monday, Evelyn Adebayo won her second OVC Player of the Week award and fourth Newcomer of the Week honor. The junior had a career-high 28 at No. 10 Tennessee and went 7-for-7 at the free throw line.
It's A Small, Small World
Both Murray State's Janika Griffith-Wallace and Morehead State's Georgia Campbell hail from the Toronto suburb of Brampton in Canada, while the Racers' DeAsia Outlaw and the Eagles' Ashley Moore played junior college ball together at Wabash Valley.

The Racers kick-off a four-game road swing at UT Martin Jan. 10, followed by a trip to Cape to face Southeast Missouri Jan. 12.
