The Game
The Murray State women's basketball will make the short drive to Carbondale Sunday in search of its sixth consecutive win when it takes on Southern Illinois at 2 p.m. on ESPN+.
Last Time Out
The Racers picked up their fifth straight win Saturday by taking down Indiana State, 70-62. The now 6-2 Racers are off to their best start since 2007-08 and the third best start in program history. The duo of Macey Turley and Lex Mayes fueled the win Saturday by combining for 44 points including a combined 13-for-14 at the free throw line. The Racers continued to excel at the stripe in the game going 26-for-34 on the night.
Murray State got off to a slow start in the game as they began the contest 0-for-10 from 3-point range and trailed by as many eight in the first half at 23-15. However, when Turley hit the first MSU three of the game with 5:40 left in the second quarter, it began a 19-6 run by the Racers to give them a 34-29 at the break. While the Sycamores tried to claw back in the third, even outscoring the Racers, 19-17, Murray State put an end to any such thoughts in the fourth. MSU went 3-for-5 from 3-point range in the final stanza and a perfect 8-for-8 at the line to seal the win.
Turley led all scorers with 23 points, to go along with six rebounds, a perfect 10-for-10 performance at the free throw line and a game-high six assists, while Mayes followed closely with 21 points, four rebounds and two blocks. Sadie Hill also had a big night at the charity stripe going 8-for-10 to finish with right points and seven rebounds off the bench, while Alexis Burpo led Murray State on the glass with nine rebounds and eight points.
The Southern Illinois Series
The overall series has not been kind to the Racers, as they have won just six of 42 total meetings, with only two coming in Carbondale. Murray State has only beaten SIU twice on their home floor in 21 attempts, with the last win there coming in 1988. In 2012, the Racers put an end to an overall 19-game win streak by the Salukis with a 67-55 win in Murray, however, since then the two teams have met four times with SIU sweeping all four contests.
Scouting The Salukis
The Salukis enter Sunday with a 5-3 overall record and are averaging 75.5 points per game, while giving up 66.0. Murray State will mark the fifth OVC opponent for SIU this season with the Salukis sweeping SIUE, Tennessee Tech and UT Martin, before losing last Saturday at Southeast Missouri, 65-59.
Makenzie Silvey currently leads the Salukis with 19.0 points per game and is shooting 49.0-percent from the floor and 43.1-percent from 3-point range. Abby Brockmeyer is the Salukis' leading rebounder thus far in the season with 7.0 boards per game to go along with 12.6 points.
Early & Often
The Racers attempted 34 free throws last Saturday against Indiana State, which is the fourth-most in a single game by a Racer team. The frequent trips helped as MSU scored 26 points from the line in the game.
Battle of the Scorers
Macey Turley currently leads the OVC in scoring with 19.1 points per game, while Makenzie Silvey leads the Missouri Valley at19.0 points. The duo will enter Sunday ranked 30th and 34th nationally in scoring.
One of The Best
Macey Turley went 10-for-10 against Indiana State, marking her second perfect 10-plus free throw performance of the season. She is currently 47-for-50 on the season and her 94.0-percent currently ranks sixth nationally.
