With a winning streak of four and winning 13 of their last 14 games, the Murray State Racers (20-4, 11-2 OVC) carry a share of first place in the Ohio Valley Conference into McBrayer Arena Saturday when they take on the Eastern Kentucky Colonels (11-15, 4-9 OVC) in a 6 p.m. Central Time tip.
The MSU/EKU series pits two of the founding members of the OVC. Saturday's game is their 163rd meeting since they first played in 1934. The two already met once this season (Jan. 5) in a high-scoring affair that the Racers had to come from behind to win 97-85. Â Ja Morant scored 34 points and handed out 10 assists and KJ Williams had 13 points and 13 rebounds as the Racers erased a 12-point deficit with 18:11 remaining to win. The lasting memory of the game was seeing two of the top players in the OVC battle. EKU's Nick Mayo scored 36 points and Morant pumped in 34 for the Racers.
The Racers are coming off a thrilling 73-71 win Thursday at Austin Peay. Ja Morant scored 32 points and dished out seven assists as he recorded his 19th game this season of 20 points or more and his fourth of 30 points or more. Tevin Brown hit four 3-point baskets to add 14 points, while Darnell Cowart scored 12 points on 6-of-8 shooting. KJ Williams added a team-high nine rebounds.
Leading by as many as 11 points twice in the second half, the Racers had to claw their way to the win in the final seconds. Williams grabbed a rebound with 1:13 remaining and scored the put-back for a 73-69 Racer lead. APSU's Zach Glotta tried to win the game with a 3-point shot with less than two seconds left, the tip-in try by Chris Harris went in, but after the officials reviewed the play, it was disallowed the Racers had a big road win 73-71.
Morant is having a MVP and All-America type season. When combining points and assists, he's fourth all-time for a single-season at MSU and enters the EKU game on the edge of 1,000 career points with 987.
