Racers Look For Third NCAA Title In Morgantown

Overview
The Murray State rifle team will compete in its 33rd NCAA Championship Friday and Saturday at the WVU Coliseum on the campus of West Virginia in Morgantown, West Virginia. MSU is currently tied with Alaska-Fairbanks for the second-most appearances all-time, while West Virginia leads the way with 36 all-time championship selections.
This marks the fifth straight trip to the championship for the Racers, finishing third in 2016 and 2017 and fourth last season. Murray State has not finished in the top two since 1988 when it complete a four year stretch of winning the national title in 1985 and 1987 and finishing as runners-up in 1986 and 1988. In addition to its eight top three finishes, MSU has finished fourth nine times, fifth nine times, seventh twice, eighth three times and ninth once.

Murray State finished the qualifying process fifth nationally and was only beaten by second-seeded Kentucky and fourth-seeded West Virginia other top-four seeds; West Virginia, TCU and Kentucky, respectively. The Racers aggregate average on the year of 4684.7 was fifth nationally, while its smallbore and air rifle of 2326.0 and 2358.8 was fourth and fifth, respectively.
In smallbore, senior Barbara Schläpfer currently boasts the highest smallbore average in the nation at 1182.3, while senior MacKenzie Martin is third nationally at 585.3. In air rifle, Barbara Schläpfer leads the Racers at 594.9, which is the nation's third highest average. In aggregate score, Schläpfer also leads the nation, boasting an average 1182.3
The Field
TCU enters the championship as the one seed based on the four-score qualifying system, while WVU currently leads the nation in aggregate scoring at 4703.3. The Mountaineers also lead the nation smallbore average at 2331.7, while TCU leads in air rifle at 2375.5. In the only individual category not led by Schläpfer, Will Shaner of defending national champion Kentucky leads the way at 596.3. Other teams competing for the title include Air Force, Army West Point, Navy and Alaska Fairbanks.
