Skyhawks Stun Racers at OVC Tournament

Murray State women's tennis traveled to Nashville, Tennessee for the first round of the Ohio Valley Conference Tournament on Friday morning. Taking on the Skyhawks of UT Martin, the Racers' season would come to a close when they came up short in heartbreaking fashion – 4-3 would be the final score from Hadley Park in Nashville.
"It was not the way we wanted our season to end because I feel like this team had much more to give. Unfortunately, we couldn't find a way to win 4 points today. UT Martin played a very good match, and they deserved the win," said MSU head coach Jorge Caetano.
While the Racers were unable to secure the doubles point, they got off to a fast start in singles when Amina Hadzic earned a victory in straight sets (6-0, 6-3) to give Murray State their first point of the day.
We had a couple of match points in doubles and couldn't capitalize, which ended up hurting us in the end. I really thought we were going to be able to turn things around in singles and, when we finally had the momentum, we weren't able to finish the match off. The girls fought very hard and I am proud of all of them," added Caetano.
After dropping coming up short at the No. 5 singles position, Stasya Sharapova knotted the match at 2-2 after she cruised to another Racer win, taking both sets with scores of 6-3.
Sara Loncarevic would keep the momentum going for Murray State at the No. 6 singles position when she triumphed in straight sets (6-3, 6-3) to give her side a 3-2 lead on the day.
With a 3-2 advantage and just two matches left in progress, the Skyhawks would shatter Murray State's postseason aspirations as the Racers came up short in the third set of both matches.
"We have had the same group of girls for the last two years, and I think our seniors deserved to go further and have a shot at the championship for all the hard work we put in during the season. However, in the end, we know that we had our chances and the loss is on us. We have to learn from it so we can do better next year," concluded Caetano.
The Racers finish the 2019 season with an overall record of 12-9.
