Racers Return Home - Host Belmont Bruins
The Murray State Racers (13-5, 6-0 OVC) play on their home court for the first time since Jan. 4 when they host the Belmont Bruins (14-5, 5-1 OVC). The tip time is set for 6 p.m. at the CFSB Center in Murray, Kentucky. The game marks the 12th meeting between the two since Belmont joined the Ohio Valley Conference in the 2012-13 season. In this period of time, the Racers have won 4-of-11 with two of those wins coming in the championship game of the last two OVC Tournaments. When the Bruins joined the OVC, it set up one of the special rivalries in the league as the Racers and Bruins have already met in the OVC Tournament championship game four times in seven seasons. At home against Belmont, the Racers are  2-2, but have lost the last two. With the OVC going to an 18-game schedule in 2017, the Racers and Bruins are set to meet twice in the regular season for the first time as the conference rotates east vs west matchups. MSU plays at Belmont (Feb. 6).
Racers Survive Close Call At SEMO
Murray State scored four points in the final 55 seconds Saturday to win 96-91 in overtime and keep a share of first place in the OVC. Tevin Brown hit four free throws to get the game into extra time where MSU outscored the Redhawks 18-13. Brown scored 29 points on 14-of-19 from the free throw line, while Anthony Smith notched his fifth double-double of the season.
Adding Up The Winning StreaksÂ
The Racers enter the week on a run of 15th straight OVC regular season wins, the fifth-best streak in program history. MSU's all-time best was 22 in a row by the teams from 1997-99 under Coach Mark Gottfried and Tevester Anderson. The OVC record is held by Western Kentucky (1965-67) of 25 in a row. At the CFSB Center, the Racers haven't lost since Belmont won there in January 2019. Since then, MSU has won their last 14, including 8-0 this season. MSU's longest home win streak is the stuff of legend. It closed down Racer Arena (30 wins) and opened the CFSB Center (17 wins) for 47 in a row. The run began in 1996 (a win over Belmont) and when it ended in 2000 (a loss to SEMO), the streak was the longest home win streak in the nation.
Brown Having Great Second Season
Murray State's Tevin Brown scored 20 points against UT Martin last week and followed with a 29-point effort against SEMO, both games were Racer wins. For the week, he hit 12 field goals, with seven coming from the 3-point line on 7-of-14. Brown made it to the free throw line 25 times  where he made 18 for 72 percent. He grabbed six rebounds and dished out 12 assists. In OVC play, Brown is No. 4 in scoring at 19.7ppg and No. 8 in assists at 4.0apg. Brown joins Parker Stewart of UTM and Junior Clay of TTU as players that are ranked in the top-10 in scoring and assists in OVC games. Brown has been very good at home this season. In eight games at The Bank, he's hitting 46 percent (21-of-45) from the 3-point line. Brown is scoring 14.6ppg, 5.6rpg and 3.0apg.
MSU's Inside Game Is A Major Force
Murray State has developed a tremendous inside game that many OVC opponents are having a hard time dealing with. In wins over UTM and SEMO last week, the Racers' front line shot 73 percent from inside the 3-point lone in 28-of-38. KJ Williams and Anthony Smith are No. 12 & 24 in the OVC scoring at 12.7ppg and 11.1. They're No. 5 & 7 in field goal percentage (Smith .575 & Williams .567). Additionally, MSU is getting 6.8ppg from Demond Robinson and 4.7 from Devin Gilmore. Smith is No. 4 in OVC rebounding at 7.8ppg and Williams is No. 7 at 7.1. Smith has six double-doubles this season. MSU's great front court is the main reason the Racers are No. 24 in NCAA D-I in defensive rebounding
