Racers Host SIUE Cougars In 25th Meeting
The Murray State Racers (16-5, 9-0 OVC) try to keep their status at the top of the Ohio Valley Conference standings when they host the SIUE Cougars (5-17, 1-7) Saturday in a 7 p.m. tip at the CFSB Center in Murray, Kentucky. The Racers continue their quest to win a third-straight conference championship. The game marks the first of two meetings this season with SIUE. The second will be at the Cougars' home court on Feb. 22.
Racers vs Cougars Series
The Racers lead the all-time series with SIUE 21-3 since their first meeting in 1975. The first game against the Cougars as an OVC member came in 2011. Since then, the Racers have won 14-of-16 and the last 11 since a loss at SIUE in 2014.
The Streaks Go On
The Racers have posted a 10-game win streak in three-straight seasons for the first time in school history after their win Thursday against EIU. MSU hasn't lost since their overtime thriller at Evansville (Dec. 21). With two great seasons in the books and a third underway, the Racers have a bunch of current winning streaks. MSU has won their last 20 games against OVC teams which includes the OVC Tournament title the Racers won in March. With that comes 18-straight OVC regular-season wins for the Racers. At home, the Racers have won their last 17 since a loss to Belmont in 2019. Included in that, is 11-straight OVC home wins.Â
Racers Escape EIU For Win Thursday
After starting the second half on a 14-3 run against the Eastern Illinois Panthers Thursday, The Racers took their largest of the game, 44-30 with 14:45 remaining and it looked like MSU would cruise. Not so fast my friend...EIU had other ideas. By the time the game hit the 4:00 mark, MSU's lead was down to 61-60. Twice in the final 18 seconds, EIU had the ball with a chance to tie it, but the Racers survived to get the win. Tevin Brown scored 24 points, while KJ Williams scored 14 points and grabbed nine rebounds. Demond Robinson was MSU's third double-figure scorer with 10 points.
Morant's No. 12 To Be Retired Saturday
Murray State Athletics will stage the grand occasion Saturday of retiring Ja Morant's No. 12 at halftime. The honor bestowed on Morant comes after an amazing two seasons with the Racers (2017-19). He has since positioned himself as one of the top candidates for the NBA Rookie of the Year award with the Memphis Grizzlies. He will be the 11th Racer number to be retired.
