At the Challenge in Music City where the Racers were smashed by Valparaiso in early November, they were 2-4 and needed a spark. MSU did manage to salvage the final game in Nashville with a 68-59 win over Drake. Three weeks later, the Racers had rebounded nicely and scored impressive wins over Western Kentucky (Dec. 6), Evansville (Dec. 13), Illinois State (Dec. 20) and Southern Illinois (Dec. 22) to switch the momentum to something positive.
Â
Going into Ohio Valley Conference play, the Racers had won eight in a row.
Â
In January and early February, the Racers went untouched with eight OVC wins to push the winning streak to 16 in a row after an overtime win at Eastern Kentucky 85-78 on Jan. 29.
Â
On Valentine's Day night, the Racers scored one of the most amazing escapes ever seen in college basketball at Southeast Missouri. With 17 seconds
remaining, SEMO hit a pair of free throws to lead the Racers by four points. MSU pushed the ball quickly down the court where Jeffery Moss scored to make it an 84-82 game with nine seconds on the clock. SEMO hit one free throw, which gave the Racers a chance to send the game into overtime with a 3-pointer. MSU's T.J. Sapp took a 3-pointer and was fouled. He went to the line and made three free throws with the game on the line to force overtime tied 85-85. With star guard Cameron Payne having fouled out with 2:30 left in regulation time, the Racers still got the win and pushed their win streak to 21 and clinch the OVC regular season championship. Payne's 26 points led MSU. Moss added 18 points and 16 came from Jarvis Williams. Jonathan Fairell grabbed 13 rebounds.
Â
On the night of Feb. 28, the Racers won 73-67 at UT Martin to set a new OVC mark with a 24-game winning streak. MSU also became only the fifth team in 67 seasons of OVC basketball to win the regular season title undefeated.
Â
At the OVC Tournament in Nashville, the Racers erased a 11-point deficit with 6:31 left to beat Morehead State 80-77 in the semifinals to make it a 25-game winning streak, the longest in the nation at the time.
Â
A night later, the Racers lost a heartbreaker in the OVC final to Belmont to end their winning streak.
Â
Many thought the Racers and head coach Steve Prohm had done enough to be worthy of a spot in the NCAA Tournament. Sadly, a top-25 ranking, 29-6 record, 25-game win streak and undefeated conference championship wasn't enough and MSU was not invited. The Racers did get a call from the NIT and they accepted. The Racers made it all the way to the quarterfinals when the season ended on another heartbreaker at Old Dominion.
The 2014-15 season still today stands as one of the most entertaining campaigns in Murray State history.
