The Game
The Murray State women's basketball team will open its 44th season of OVC action Saturday afternoon at The CFSB Center in Murray when it host rival Austin Peay at 2 p.m. on ESPN, WBZB 104.5 FM and the Zeno Radio app.
Scouting The Govs
The Govs are currently 2-2 on the year with wins over North Alabama and DII Trevecca Nazarene and losses to Southern Illinois and Chattanooga. Austin Peay is currently averaging 74.0 points per game on 44.0-percent shooting, while allowing opponents to average 72.8 points a game on 46.9-percent shooting. Like the Racers, the Govs currently have five players averaging 10 or more points per game. Brianah Ferrby leads with 14.5 points, while Maggie Knowles follows at 12.0 and sister Brandi Ferby comes in at 11.8. Shay-Lee Kirby is next in line for Peay at 10.8 points per game, while Nina De Leon Negron averages an even 10.0.
Last Time vs. Austin Peay
Austin Peay snapped a seven-game losing streak in Murray last year when they defeated the Racers on the final day of the regular-season. The Govs proved to be too much that day for a Racers team hampered by injuries and picked up an 88-59 win.
A Win Saturday Would...
A win Saturday would give head coach Rechelle Turner her third win in an OVC opener in four tries.
History Maker
Freshman Katelyn Young joined Samford's Alex Munday this week as the only two players to ever win three consecutive OVC Player of the Week awards in the first three weeks of the season. The Oakwood, Ill., native went 7-for-12 from the floor in Murray State's lone game last week and a perfect 6-for-6 at the charity stripe. She finished the win over Mississippi Valley with 20 points, five rebounds, three assists, two steals and two blocks.
"When This Thing Hits 80 Points..."
The Racers have scored 80-plus points in four of five games this season, a feat they only accomplished four times last season against DI competition. In the four games in which they scored 80 or more points, they are currently 3-1 on the year.
Four To Score
For the third time this season, Murray State had four or more players reach double-digits against North Alabama. The Racers are now 3-0 when four-plus players score 10 or more points.
Deep Analysis
Another indicator of the Racers trending upwards this season are their averages in "analysis" stats. So far this season MSU is either keeping pace with or has surpassed last year's total in all four categories. The biggest increase so far, thanks mostly to the increased height of this year's team has been in points in the paint where the Racers have picked up 10.8 points per game.
