Racers' 25-Game Win Streak At The Bank Ends In Loss To Morehead State

The Murray State Racers saw their 25-game winning streak at the CFSB Center end Saturday in a 61-56 loss to the Morehead State Eagles in Murray, Ky.

The Racers (4-5) fell to 1-3 the Ohio Valley Conference as they hit the road next week for games at Eastern Illinois and SIUE Thursday and Saturday.

Tevin Brown led the Racers with 17 points as their only double-digit scorer on a night when the Racers struggled to score and ended the game hitting 35 percent on 18-of-51 from the field and 25 percent from the 3-point line on 5-of-20.

Freshman Jackson Sivills made his first start for the Racers and hit his only shot from the field, a 3-pointer, but the Racers trailed 8-6 just four minutes into the game. The largest deficit the Racers faced was 12 points at 8:47 before the half. Brown hit three shots in a row to make it a 32-24 Eagles lead at 4:08. The Racers closed the half with a pair of free throws from Brown and a jumper by Chico Carter, Jr. to cut the lead to 36-29 at the half.

With 3:33 remaining, the Racers made a final push to wrestle the game from the Eagles when Brion Whitley connected from the 3-point line to make it a four-point deficit. KJ Williams hit a pair of free throws to tie the game 56-56 with 2:02 on the clock. With 1:23 left, the Racers got a defensive stop and created a chance to grab the lead, before Williams was called for an illegal screen with 56 seconds left that fouled him out of the game. With 48 seconds left, the Racers had another chance to tie the game but missed.

Game Notes
The Racers' 13-game win streak against the Eagles at the CFSB Center was snapped. The last time Morehead State won in Murray was on Jan. 23, 2003 by an 83-76 score. Morehead State's all-time scorer, Ricky Minard scored 28 points to lead the Eagles and offset a great game by James Singleton (20PT/17R). The game also featured future 1,000 point scorers, Cuthbert Victor, Antoine Whelchel and Chris Shumate for the Racers. Tevester Anderson was Murray State's coach and Kyle Macy was head coach for the Eagles.

The Racers' home win streak ends at 25, as they almost went two years without losing a game at the CFSB Center. The 25-game run is the fifth-longest streak in MSU history and was fifth in the nation. MSU's last home loss was to Belmont on Jan. 24, 2019.

Tevin Brown was honored before the game for becoming the 47th member of the MSU 1000-Point Club. He was presented a special commemorative basketball by Racer head coach Matt McMahon. Brown got to career 1,000 when scored 22 points, Dec. 5), in a home win over Illinois State.

The Racers against Morehead State is Murray State's second-longest running series that played it's 166th game tonight. Only MSU's series with Tennessee Tech is longer having played 179 games. Murray State has played four other teams 100 times or more including: Eastern Kentucky (164), Western Kentucky (151), Middle Tennessee (142) and Austin Peay (130).

Next week the Racers travel to the Prairie State for games against Eastern Illinois and SIUE Thursday and Saturday. MSU takes on Eastern Illinois Thursday at Lantz Arena (Jan. 7) in Charleston at 7:30 p.m. and the SIUE Cougars Saturday at 12:30 p.m. in First Community Arena (Jan. 9).
