Prairie State Awaits Racers - MSU At Eastern Illinois Thursday
The Murray State Racers (4-5, 1-3) hit the road this week for a game at Eastern Illinois. The Thursday night tilt is with the veteran EIU Panthers (4-5, 1-1) at Lantz Arena in Charleston at 7:30 p.m.Â
Â
MSU Looks To Bounce Back From Saturday Upset
The Racers are trying to bounce back from Saturday's loss to Morehead State that snapped their 25-game home winning streak. It also marked the first win for the Eagles at the CFSB Center in 17 years. Scoring has been a problem for the Racers in their three-game skid. Tevin Brown led the Racers with 17 points as their only double-digit scorer on a night when the Racers struggled to score and ended the game hitting 35 percent on 18-of-51 from the field and 25 percent from the 3-point line on 5-of-20. MSU was also in a rare spot of not making free throws as they made only 15-of-27 for 56 percent.
Â
EIU MSU History
Since EIU joined the OVC in 1997, the Racers have won 41 out of their 50 regular season meetings and 19 of 27 games at Lantz Arena. Up until their loss there at the end of last season, the Racers had won five in a row and 10 of the last 12.
Â
A Work In Progress
Having lost three consecutive games for the first time since 2017, the Racers are in an unpreferred spot, but have plans to work their way back to the form they showed in their 87-57 win over Austin to open OVC play (Dec. 8). MSU is 1-3 to start league play for the first time since 2002. However, if they can duplicate what the 2001-02 team did, they'll be very happy. Coached by Tevester Anderson, the 01-02 team did get on track to finish third in the OVC and went on to win the OVC Tournament with wins over EIU, Morehead State and Tennessee Tech to advance to the NCAA Tournament where they played Georgia in the Chicago regional. If the Racers can get their usual defense and rebounding totals back in line, the slumping offense is sure to return. In the three-game skid, The Racers have been out-rebounded 102-87 and they've given the ball up 10 times more than the opponent in turnovers. If the defense and rebounding comes up to standard, the Racers offense will certainly follow. In the three games, the Racers are shooting 45 percent (67-of-147) from the field and only 24 percent (13-of-55) from 3-point range. From the free throw line, the Racers are also slumping at 65 percent (34-of-52).
Â
Brown Honored for Joining The MSU 1000-Point Club
Tevin Brown was honored before the Morehead State game (Jan. 2) for becoming the 47th member of the MSU 1000-Point Club. He was presented a special commemorative basketball by Racer head coach Matt McMahon. Brown got to career 1,000 when scored 22 points, Dec. 5), in a home win over Illinois State.
