Racers Take Aim At Fifth OVC Title In Six Years

Murray State travels to Morehead State in search of 15th OVC championship
The Murray State rifle team will travel to Morehead State Saturday in search of its fifth conference championship in six years and 15th overall at the 2021 OVC Rifle Championships at the Button Rifle Range in Morehead, Kentucky.
The Racers enter the championship event at tenth nationally, two spots out of the eight team field for the 2021 NCAA Rifle Championships in March. This weekend's OVC Championships and next weekend's trip to Jacksonville State will give Murray State two more opportunities to bolster its three-score qualifying average before the annual NCAA qualifier Feb. 20 in Murray.
Led by sophomore Matias Kiuru, the Racers have gone 6-0 against OVC competition so far this season and are 8-3 overall in shoulder-to-shoulder competition with all three losses coming to second-ranked Kentucky. Competing on both guns this weekend, along with Kiuru, will be lone senior Dana Buesseler, junior Anna Scheer and freshman Allison Henry. Rounding out the squad for the championships will be junior Emily Fitzgerald on smallbore Saturday and freshman Scott Patterson on air rifle Sunday.
As a team, the Racers currently lead the OVC with a 2316.6 smallbore average, a 2351.1 air rifle average and a 4667.7 aggregate average. Those averages are good enough to place the Racers' score in each category at ninth, 14th and 10th, respectively.
Kiuru has led the Racers and the OVC this season in all three categories and is currently 10th nationally in smallbore (585.0), 13th nationally in air rifle (593.4) and 12th nationally in aggregate scoring (1178.4). Henry currently follows Kiuru in smallbore at 580.4, while Scheer follows in air rifle at 587.4. Henry and Scheer also follow Kiuru in aggregate average on the year at a1167.4 and 1163.5, respectively.
