Racers Are Primed For a Surge
It started out as a four-game road trip at the beginning of last week and it ended up with being a three-game swing to SEMO, Morehead State and Eastern Kentucky. Last Monday the Racers got a career-high 26 points from KJ Williams and played their best defensive game in OVC play to get a 77-60 win on the Redhawks' home court. MSU ran into a buzz saw at Morehead State as the Eagles won their 10th consecutive game 66-56. That left Saturday's game at EKU. The Racers played their best game of the week in a 76-64 win on the Colonels home court and got a career-high 23 points from Chico Carter, Jr., in their sixth OVC win.
In a season of extreme volatility because of the pandemic, the Racers have had to figure this out like every other NCAA D-I team that totals 340 nationally. The Racers have not had the type of OVC season, they historically have. However, ask anyone in the league and nobody is counting the Racers out. As they come into this week, MSU can jump above the .500 mark in total record for the first time since they were 4-3 (Dec. 8) after a 30-point win over Austin Peay. That also the last time MSU was above .500 in OVC play at 1-0. So home sweet home it is and the Racers are looking to make a move up the OVC standings and secure the best seed they can for the OVC Tournament in Evansville (March 3-6) at the Ford Center.
Carter Gives Racers More Scoring Punch
As roles and responsibilities are becoming more understood, maybe it's time for Chico Carter, Jr., to assert himself as MSU's third big scoring threat along with KJ Williams and Tevin Brown? Carter scored a career-high 23 points in the EKU game Saturday on 9-of-14 from the floor. On the three-game road trip last week, the sophomore guard averaged 14 points per game on 16-of-31 (.516) including hitting 7-of-13 from the 3-point line for a percentage of .538.
Williams closing on 1000
KJ Williams, the OVC Player of the Week (Feb. 1), was a point of emphasis for the Morehead State Eagles as they limited him to only seven points. However, KJ is still one of the best big men in the league and is now leading the Racers in OVC scoring at 15.8 points per game and in rebounding (8.9). And the MSU 1000-Point Club is calling as well. Williams now has 925 career points at Murray State in 82 games.
Bostick Proves Steady At Point Guard Position
Since making his first start as a Racer (Jan. 16) at UT Martin, freshman Dionte Bostick has been a steadying influence on the Racer offense. In the 10 games prior to his taking over the point guard position, the Racers never had a game of less than 10 turnovers. Since his arrival, MSU has four such games. In 136 minutes as a starter, Bostick has only 14 turnovers of his own doing. In eight games as a starter, Bostick is scoring 5.1 points per game and dishing out 4.1 assists in 17.1 minutes played per game.
