The Game
After a season opening win last week against UT Martin, the Racers will look to keep up the momentum Sunday in Cape Girardeau, Missouri against 16th-ranked Southeast Missouri. Kickoff from historic Houck Stadium is scheduled for 2 p.m. and air live on Froggy 103.7 FM and ESPN+.
The Series At A Glance
Sunday will be the 55th meeting between Southeast Missouri and Murray State with the Racers leading the all-time series, 40-13-1 overall and 18-9-1. Despite the Racers sizeable lead in the overall series, it's the Redhawks who have done the winning as of late, taking five of the last seven meetings.
Scouting The Redhawks
After a non-conference loss to Southern Illinois in the fall, Southeast Missouri is now 1-1 after trouncing EIU on the road last week, 47-7.
The 16th-ranked Redhawks are currently averaging 404.0 yards and 32.0 points per game, while holding opponents 13.5 points on 353.5 yards per game.
Nebraska transfer Andrew Bunch is 29-for-52 at quarterback on the season for SEMO with two touchdowns and two interceptions for 177.5 yards per game, while his leading target has been Johnny King who averages 74.5 yards per game on nine catches with two touchdowns.
Defensively, Mike Mathews leads the Redhawks with 10 tackles, an interception and two breakups.
Gimmee That
The Racers forced three turnovers last week against UT Martin including two by Don Parker, a forced fumble and an interception.
How Low Can You Go
The 213 yards allowed by the Racers defense last week was the lowest offensive output by an opponent since the 2017 season finale in which, despite losing to SEMO, the Racers held the Redhawks to 184 total yards.
Just One More
LaMartez Brooks tallied 27 receiving yards last week against UTM, he needs just one more yard to reach 1,000 career receiving yards.
Opening Day
In a strange occurrence, MSU's game against UTM served as the season, home and OVC opener for Murray State. The Racers are now 52-39-4 all-time in season openers, 65-26-4 in home openers, 31-42 in OVC openers and 18-19 when the OVC opener is at home. In addition, the Racers are now 4-2-1 all-time against UT Martin in season openers, 3-1-1 in home openers and 2-2 in OVC openers.
