Clash of OVC Leaders - Saturday In NashvilleÂ
The Murray State Racers (13-2) take on the Belmont Bruins (13-3) Saturday in a 4 p.m. tip off at the Curb Event Center in Nashville, Tennessee. The game marks an Ohio Valley Conference matchup of 3-0 teams in the early going of the 2021-22 league season that features an 18-game slate.Â
The Racers and Bruins both won games Thursday on their home courts. The Racers defeated Tennessee State 67-44, while Belmont handled Tennessee Tech 92-77.
Series History
Since Belmont's entry into the OVC in 2013, the game became an instant rivalry with many close games that often decided the OVC's representative to the NCAA Tournament. In 2013, 2015, 2018, 2019 and 2020, these two battled in the OVC Tournament championship game and the Racers won twice in 2018 and 2019. Since the series became an OVC game, the Racers have not be able to win in the Curb Center and are 0-5. A win Saturday would put the Racers one up on the Bruins with another meeting (Feb. 24) in Murray in a national TV broadcast on ESPNU. Belmont leads the all-time series 12-9 over the Racers.
MSU's Dynamic Duo
While Tevin Brown was named to the Lou Henson National Player of the Year Watchlist this week by CollegeInsider.com, he and KJ Williams continue their move up theÂ
Murray State career lists. For starters, Brown recently became the third MSU player to score 1,000 points, get 500 rebounds and have 350 assists, while Williams is the ninth Racer to score 1,000 career points and grab 700 rebounds. Brown enters the Belmont game 11th in program history with 1,619 points and Williams is 25th with 1,298 points.Â
There is the other matter of the MSU and OVC 3-point record. The Racers' record is currently held by Racer Hall of Famer Isaiah Canaan (2009-13) with 304 and Austin Peay's Joe Sibbitt (1994-98) has the OVC top mark with 319. Brown has 298. Brown was the OVC leader as the week began in the OVC in all 3-point categories and points per game. Brown is 10th in the nation in made 3-pointers and 25th in percentage.
Reshuffled Schedules
With Covid protocols being in play all over NCAA D-I basketball, the Racers are in a stretch of 16 days and no fault of their own, in which they play eight games. After the Belmont game, the Racers play Monday on Martin Luther King at Eastern Illinois, before coming home Thursday to play the Panthers again. After a home game (Jan. 22) on Coach Ron Greene Day against UT Martin, the Racers get Tennessee Tech twice, before playing at Morehead State (Jan. 29).
