The Game
The Murray State women's basketball team will attempt to hand a team its first OVC loss of the season Saturday for the second-consecutive game when they travel to the Curb Event Center in Nashville, Tennessee to take on Belmont at 2 p.m.
Series At A Glance
Saturday will be the 21st all-time meeting between the Racers and Buins with Belmont holding a 17-3 lead. After coming up empty on its seven previous trips to the Curb Center, MSU finally got its first win over Belmont on its home court last season, putting to bed an 11-game losing streak to the Bruins.
Scouting The Bruins
For the second-straight game, MSU will take on a team that is undefeated in OVC play. Belmont is currently 8-5 on the year and 4-0 in league play after a 65-46 win over Austin Peay, Thursday in Nashville.
The Bruins are currently averaging 66.8 points per game on 39.8-percent shooting from the floor with 36.1 rebounds per game, while their opponents are currently averaging 60.2 points on 39.0-percent shooting with 37.5 rebounds per game.
The 2020-21 OVC Freshman of the Year, Destinee Wells, currently leads Belmont in scoring and assists and 16.8 and 4.0 assists per game. Tuti Jones follows Wells at 11.2 points per game, while Madison Bartley adds 10.9. On the glass, its Conley Chinn that leads the way at 5.2 rebounds per game, while Tessa Miller and Bartley follow at 4.9 and 4.8, respectively.
A Win Would...
A win Saturday would give Murray State its second-ever win over Belmont at the Curb Center, as well as its first-ever set of back-to-back wins on the Bruins' home court.
Putting Up Big Numbers
After leading 52-51 at the end of the third quarter, the Racers outscored Tennessee State, 25-12 in the fourth Thursday. The 25 points scored in the final stanza were the most by the Racers this season, as were the 46 second-half points.
Take What You Can Get
Despite TSU turning the ball over just 12 times, the Racers took full advantage by scoring 18 points off turnovers. In comparison, TSU scored just five points off of 13 Racer turnovers.
Friends Make It Happen
The Racers continued to assist on a high percentage of their baskets Thursday, with 17 assists on 23 made field goals. That number, which equates to nearly 74-percent, is well above the Racers' season average in the category of 61.2-percent.
Convincing Fashion
Ten of Murray State's 11 wins so far this season have come by 10 or more points, with eight of those wins coming by 20-plkus points. Meanwhile only one of MSU's four losses have by 10 or more points.
Can't Get Rid Of Us That Easy
After Belmont announced their plan to move to the Missouri Valley Conference, it looked like the end of the line for the Racer-Bruin rivalry. However, the rivalry now remains, as MSU will also join the MVC next season.
