Most unique off-season leads MSU into 2022-23 season
The Murray State Racers have had a memorable last 12 months. In January, the Missouri Valley Conference invited them into the league and MSU accepted and officially became Valley members July 1. The 2021-22 season saw the Racers win 31 games which included their fifth victory in the NCAA Tournament. Coach Matt McMahon left for LSU and Coach Steve Prohm returned to MSU where he hired McMahon and created a hall of fame history as assistant to Billy Kennedy from 2006-11 and as head coach from 2011-15. Prohm hit the ground running the day he was introduced as head coach on March 28. He rebuilt the MSU roster that features 12 newcomers on a 14-man team.

Â
Season Notes
The Racers begin their 98th season of collegiate basketball and it will be historic. After being a founding member of the Ohio Valley Conference in 1948 and spending 74 years in the league, they debut as members of the Missouri Valley Conference (Dec. 1) at home against Illinois State.
The Racers play their first MVC road game at Valparaiso (Dec. 4).
Â
Missouri Valley Notes
For the first time, the MVC will have 12 teams after the first time of inviting three new members schools for the same season as Belmont and UIC join the MVC with the Racers. In 2022-23, MVC teams will play a 20-game league schedule for the first time, with two conference games taking place the week after Thanksgiving. Teams will play nine opponents twice, and the other two league teams once each (one home, one away). MSU's opponents they meet only once are at UNI (Jan. 10) and UIC at home (Jan. 14).
