Racers Roll With Defensive Gem At Austin Peay

The Racers continued their undefeated start in the OVC at 11-0
The Murray State Racers posted their 11th-straight victory in a 65-53 win over the Austin Peay Governors Thursday at the Winfield Dunn Center in Clarksville, Tennessee. The win pushed the Racers to 11-0 as the sole leader in the Ohio Valley Conference.

With the Racers (21-2) set to join the Missouri Valley Conference this summer and Austin Peay headed to the A-Sun Conference, this game marked the final meeting for the two at the Govs' home court as OVC members. APSU returns the game to Murray State's CFSB Center for a national TV game on ESPNU (Feb. 17).

Tevin Brown, the OVC career record holder in 3-point baskets scored 17 points on 3-of-8 from long range with a team-high eight rebounds. Justice Hill added 12 points with six turnovers and zero turnovers and MSU got 10 points from DJ Burns and four steals.

In the first half, down 16-7, the Racers put together a 28-15 run in the final 12:05 of the half for a 35-31 lead.

Coming out of the halftime intermission, the Racers began the second half with a pair of 3-pointers from Brown for a 12-point lead, their largest of the game at the 14:58 mark (44-32). With 9:05 remaining Austin Peay cut the MSU lead to five points at 47-42, but the Racers answered with back-to-back layups by DJ Burns for a 51-42 lead at 7:20 left. The Racers defensive effort held the Govs to only one field goal in the final 6:54 and they finished the game on a 18-6 run.

MSU held Austin Peay to 8-of-20 from the field for 40 percent and forced the Govs into 10 overs. For the game, the Racers scored 23 points off of 18 APSU turnovers. The Racers won the rebound battle 34-28 and had 12 offensive rebounds that created 18 second-chance points.

Racers Selected For Two Home Games On ESPNU
The Murray State men's basketball is hosting a pair of televised home games on ESPNU as announced by the Ohio Valley Conference for the 2021-22 season. The Racers will appear on ESPNU (Feb. 17) when they host the Austin Peay Governors at the CFSB Center in a 6 p.m. tip. The second game happens at home (Feb. 24) against the Belmont Bruins in a tip off of 8 p.m. Both of the TV games for the Racers come on Thursday nights. The OVC schedule has a total of nine total men's basketball televised games (six regular season contests and three OVC Tournament games) to be aired by one of the ESPN networks during the 2021-22 season. This includes three nights of coverage at the OVC Tournament (March 4-5) at the Ford Center in Evansville, Indiana.

- Today's game was another game in the 2021-22 Popeye's Battle of the Border as the Racers keep a count of wins and losses against the Governors.
- After splitting the games today in Clarksville, the Racers lead 15-9.
- The Racers are now 7-1 on the road this season including a 5-0 mark in OVC play.
- MSU leads the all-time series with Austin Peay 88-45 and are 31-30 in Clarksville.
- McMahon's outstanding success for the Racers now has him at 144-66 (.687) in seven seasons and 86-31 (.735) in OVC games.
- In his last five seasons, McMahon's Racers are an incredible 111-35 (.760).
- With three rebounds vs APSU tonight, KJ Williams joined the 1,000-point/800 rebound club today. This group of seven also includes Popeye Jones (1988-92), Jim Jennings (1961-64), Stewart Johnson (1963-66), Isaac Spencer (1997-01), Cuthbert Victor (2000-04) and Marcelous Starks (1971-74).
- Additionally, Williams will soon join Jones and Spencer as the only MSU players with 1,500 points and 800 rebounds. Williams now has 1,434 points.
- 14:56 second half, Tevin Brown made his second 4-point play this season when he was fouled making a 3-point basket and made the ensuing free throw. Brown has three in his career. He had one at home against Chattanooga (Dec. 18) and had his first against Austin Peay in 2020.
- Brown has made a 3-pointer in 19 straight games. The last time he failed to make at least one three was against ETSU (Nov. 22).
- The Racers return home for a Saturday night game against the SIUE Cougars where they will be trying for their 300th win at the CSFB Center.
