Day 1 OVC Championship – Racers’ Determination Comes Into Focus

Bolstered by good scores in the pole vault, Heptathlon and 10K, Murray State eyes the OVC Outdoor Track & Field Championship in their home venue
The Murray State women's track & field team had a solid first day of the Ohio Valley Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships with outstanding performances in scoring events that put them in second place with two days of competition to go at Roy Stewart Stadium/Marshall Gage Track in Murray, Kentucky.
The day began with Alexis Meloche scoring a PR in the javelin and posting an eventual fourth place finish. The Racers followed with a Heptathlon high jump duel between teammates Jenna Pauly and Meghan Fletcher. The Racer pair finished first and second with a jump of 1.73m. In the evening pole vault championship, MSU's Brooke Misukonis, Jenna Pauly and Shannon Riley placed second, third and fourth to give the Racers 19 points. The day was capped by a surprising fourth place and seventh place showing by Ruth Kimutai and Breanna Day.
Southeast Missouri (48 points), Belmont (47) and the Racers (31) make up the top-3 teams after the first day of competition. The Racers have some of their best athletes yet to appear including a strong contingent of long jumpers like Rachel Hagans who ranks in the top-10 nationally. The OVC event also sees MSU's strong relay teams attempt to qualify on Tuesday.

Located in Murray, Kentucky, the athletics department of Murray State University is a NCAA Division I member and plays in the Football Championship Subdivision. The Racers have 15 programs including men's teams for baseball, basketball, cross country, football and golf and women's teams for basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, softball, tennis, track & field and volleyball, as well as a mixed gender rifle team. Currently a member of the Ohio Valley Conference, the Racers will join the Missouri Valley Conference on July 1, 2022.

- Alexis Morche's first Javelin attempt of the day netted her a PR of 41.52m.
- The Racers are dominating the Heptathlon with Pauly, Fletcher and Anna Vollet sitting in first, second and fourth place with the second day of events to come Tuesday morning.
- Ruth Kimutai had a time of 40:04 in the 10K and Day finished with a time of 42:16.
- The Racers are trying to win their second title in the last three seasons after they last won the championship in 2019.
