Racers Finish Runner-Up in MVC Championship Debut

Murray State track and field finished second overall in their inaugural MVC Indoor Track and Field Championships
Murray State track and field close their inaugural Missouri Valley Conference Championships second overall with 108 points, Monday.

The Racers saw five podium finishes on the second day, including three gold medals.

Kayla Bell opened was first in adding the medal tally as she won the 400m dash, breaking the long-standing conference record in the process, with a time of 53.47 seconds. Verneta Lesforis of Missouri State set the previous record (53.82) in 1999.

Meghan Fletcher kept the energy going as she grabbed her second gold medal of the meet by winning the high jump and setting a new school record with a 1.80m (5' 10.75") mark. Her jump is ranked 38th in the nation.

Racers quartet Bell, Tylantis Atlas, LaMiah Campbell and Lucia Herrero Yanez closed the curtain with a win in the 4x400m relay. They clocked a time of 3:45.18.

"We are very proud of this group for everything they accomplished at our first MVC championships," said head coach Adam Kiesler.

"School and MVC records as well as numerous personal records with six event winners showed that we believed in the process all the way back in the fall. Coach Kelsey Riggins and Coach Jordan Johnston had their athletes more than ready and the outcomes showed that."
Fletcher was named the Championship's Most Valuable Athlete after collecting a total of 20 points.

Illinois State took first place with 138 points.

MSU now prepare for the outdoor season, where they will open the season as hosts of the Margaret Simmons Invite, March 24-25.
