Murray State baseball scored a combined 28 runs across Sunday's doubleheader

Murray State baseball swept their Sunday doubleheader in dominant fashion winning 14-3 and 14-5 across the two games with Valparaiso at Bauer Field in Valparaiso, Indiana. With the two wins, the Racers secure their first-ever MVC series win.

Game One Recap

Taylor Howell and Brennan McCullough led the way for the Racers at the dish with Howell launching two, two-run home runs in the contest to go with a single. McCullough went 4-for-4 at the plate with two RBIs and three runs scored while also drawing two walks to reach base safely six times in the matchup.

Drew Vogel had an impressive day with three hits including two doubles and two RBIs. in the first game of the doubleheader.

Jacob Pennington once again had a quality start on the mound for the Racers, going 7.0 innings pitched while allowing just two runs and striking out four. Pennington lowered his season ERA to 3.00 across 45.0 innings pitched as opponents are hitting just .182 against the right hander. Nathan Holler tossed a scoreless frame in the ninth to round out the all-around performance for MSU in game one.

Game Two Recap

It was much of the same in game two as the scorching-hot Murray State bats continued their fireworks, combining for 16 hits and 14 runs in the contest.

McCullough continued to swing a hot bat with a three-run blast to center field to start the scoring in game two. Dustin Mercer shined in the bout as he went 4-for-5 with three singles and a triple to pair with three RBIs and three runs scored. Mercer leads the Racers with a .325 batting average with 60 total bases this season.

Cade Sammons picked up three hits including a double out of the lead-off spot for MSU as he scored five runs. Vogel shined once again with three more hits to bring his total to six hits for the day with two more RBIs in his efforts.

Matt Boynton and Thomas McNabb combined for 4.1 innings of relief work while allowing no runs. The pairing struck out seven Beacons while allowing just four hits to help secure the second win of the day.

Murray State and Valpo will finish off their series tomorrow with the finale set for 11 a.m.
