Racers Take Down First-Place Sycamores in Friday Night Win

Murray State baseball defeated 11th ranked Indiana State 12-5 to start their series

Murray State baseball defeated Indiana State 12-5 in game one of their three-game set on Friday night in Terre Haute, Indiana. Logan Bland and Drew Vogel led the Racers with a home run each in a powerful offensive night for MSU.

Bland would go 3-for-6 in the outing from the leadoff spot with three RBIs while Drew Vogel had three hits of his own including a solo blast and two doubles. Catcher Taylor Howell would pour in a 4-for-5 performance with a double as Carson Garner had a two-hit night of his own.

Dustin Mercer and Seth Gardner each launched a home run as the Racers put together 16 hits against an Indiana State team that entered the contest ninth in the nation in team ERA.

Jacob Pennington earned the start for MSU going 4.0 innings pitched while allowing just three earned runs and picking up four strikeouts. Matt Boynton earned his fourth win of the season in a special relief performance. Boynton tossed 4.0 innings while allowing no earned runs and striking out three while giving up just three hits.

Nathan Holler tossed a scoreless, hitless ninth inning to close out the Sycamores who entered the contest as high as 11th nationally in the College Baseball poll while ranking in the top 25 in other nationally recognized polls.

The series will continue tomorrow with game two of the series set for a 2 p.m. first pitch.
