Racers Put Five in Double-Figures but Drop Road Tilt At Pitt

Murray State faced the Panthers in their first road game of the 2024-25 season
The Murray State men's basketball team took Friday's second game of the season to the brink before dropping an 83-68 decision to the Pittsburgh Panthers at Petersen Events Center.

MSU's balanced attack showed well again as five of the eight players that saw action scored in double-figures including 15 points by Terence Harcum, 11 each from from Kylen Milton and Alden Applewhite and 10 points from JaCobi Wood and KyeRon Lindsay.

In their first action against Pitt since 2003, the Racers trailed by 10 with 9:06 before halftime, the Racers put together a 9-0 in a period of two minutes to cut the Pitt lead to 29-28. The Racers took their first lead of the game at 2:05 when AJ Ferguson hit a 3-pointer for a 37-36 advantage and moments later, Ferguson scored again and the Racers had a 39-36 lead, but Pitt reclaimed it at the intermission 41-39.

With 9:08 remaining in the game, Harcum hit back-to-back threes and the Racers took the lead 63-62.

But the shooting touch left the Racers when they missed six of their next seven shots from the field (0-of-5 from the 3-point line) and fell behind 78-65 with 3:46 remaining.

Game Notes
- Applewhite and Lindsay combined for 6-of-11 from the field and 9-of-10 from the free throw line in more than 46 minutes of court time. They produced 21 points and hauled in nine rebounds (eight from Applewhite).
- For Lindsay, his 10 points his collegiate career-high. Applewhite's career-high is 20 points in 2022 when he played at Portland.
- With scoring an upset in mind, the Racers were attempting to beat an ACC team for the first time since 1988 when MSU downed North Carolina State in the NCAA Tournament 78-75.
- The game was also Murray State's first clash with a team from the ACC since the 2019 NCAA Tournament when the Racers played Florida State in the second round, which was Ja Morant's final game at MSU.
- This game marked the second meeting between the Racers and Panthers since the first one in 2003.
- The Racers have back-to-back games with five players reaching 10 points after doing the same Monday in the season opener against Bethel (TN).
