The Racers Outlast Gamecocks in Sunday Match

Murray State women's tennis earned their first outdoor match win against Jacksonville State on Sunday afternoon.

The Racers started out strong in doubles play, with all three MSU doubles pairs defeating JSU. Partners Annika Pschorr and Sarah Bureau clinched the doubles point with their win. The match was Bureau's 125th career win. The Racers are now 19-4 in doubles matches for the spring season.

Heading into singles play, JSU made up some ground, earning wins against Bureau and freshman Varya Alexeyeva in hard fought sets. Graduate Emma Honore earned the first singles point, defeating JSU's Anna Syrova in straight sets. Number one singles freshman Valeria Chaikovskaia swept her opponent in straight sets as well. Chaikovskaia is now 6-2 for singles play this season, all at the number one position.

Graduate Marit Kreugel clinched the match win in a dominating third set, going 6-0. Kreugel is undefeated in singles this season with a perfect 4-0 record. She earned her 100th career win earlier this season.

"It feels good to be on the winning side on this one. After a great start, we allowed Jacksonville State to get back in this match and it got really close in the end but I am happy we found a way to get the 4th point," Coach Jorge Caetano said.

"We worked a lot on doubles this week and it was great to see our girls playing aggressively again, taking control of the points from the first ball. In singles we have to continue to work on staying focused and alert from the first to the last ball. It almost cost us the match today so we will learn from it and continue to improve."
