3/30/2024 10:30:00 PM | Women's Track and Field
Chelby Melvin set a new program record in the 400-meter hurdles.
The Racers ended their split competition among three meets this weekend on Sunday, completing events at the Texas Relays in Austin, Texas, the Bobcat Invitational & Multi in San Marcos, Texas and the Joey Haines Invite in Cape Girardeau, Missouri.
The Racers saw 31 top-10 finishes throughout the weekend, 15 of which were among the top five in their respective events. 16 different Racers also saw 25 personal records broken.Â
Chelby Melvin, who was just named this week's Missouri Valley Conference Women's Track Athlete of the Week, set a new program record with a time of 59.34 seconds in the 400-meter hurdles at the Texas Relays.
"This weekend was quality from start to finish," head coach Adam Kiesler said. "Breaking a school record is no easy task. Melvin had that in her sights so we are very happy she could break it in March."
Along with her record-setting performance, her top-10 finish in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 13.87 seconds now sits sixth all-time in program history.
Kayla Bell and Amirr Evans were also two of the Racers that saw a top-10 finish. Bell finished sixth in the 800-meter and Evans saw a runner-up finish in the 1,500-meter at the Texas Relay.
At the Bobcat Invitational were Jenna Pauly and Meghan Fletcher, competing in the women's heptathlon. Pauly finished fourth with 5,174 points and Fletcher with 4,995 points, both of which were personal bests. Pauly also saw a new best finish with a distance of 31.32 meters in the javelin throw. Fletcher saw PRs in the 100-meter hurdles (14.52), shot put (10.17 meters) and the 200-meter (24.56).
"The multis down in Texas both came away with PRs and still have a little juice left, which is exciting," Kiesler added. "There are a few events after the weekend we know will be close to first-round marks, so we look to build off of those. At SEMO, there were numerous good marks. We always talk about good weather and the kids there took advantage of it. Soon we will be moving into the heart of our schedule and this is an encouraging start after two weeks."
