Racers Fall To Bearcats In Season Opener
8/15/2024 9:01:00 PM | Women's Soccer
Griselda Revolorio set a new career high in saves against Cincinnati.
The Racers dropped their season opening match of the 2024 season on the road at Cincinnati, falling to the Bearcats 2-1 Thursday night.
"We faced a good Cincinnati team tonight and we really pushed them to the end," head coach Matt Lodge said. "We got out of the gate slow and [gave up] a couple mistakes that we got punished for."
Cincinnati's Coley Sidloski struck first early with a strike in the box to the top left corner of the net in the eighth minute. After 30 minutes of solid defensive play by the Racers, the Bearcats extended their lead with a breakaway goal in the 38th minute from Rylee Felton.
In the 81st minute, Breece Bass took the ball into the box and attempted a cross in the box before the ball deflected off the left arm of a Cincinnati defender, bringing up a penalty kick for MSU. Morgan Bodker then stepped up and delivered a penalty kick to the top left corner of the net to draw the Racers to within a goal, netting the first score of 2024 for Murray State and the seventh of her career.
"I challenge my team to win the second half and play on the front foot and they absolutely did that," Lodge added about his team's performance after halftime.
Griselda Revolorio set a new career high with nine saves on Thursday, breaking her previous record of seven saves that was set in the quarterfinals of the 2023 Missouri Valley Conference tournament.
The Racers posted 10 shots with two on goal. Mary Hardy led the team with four shots, with Tori Schrimpf and Breece Bass taking two shots apiece. Six Racers saw a full 90 minutes on the pitch.
Murray State returns to action on Sunday, August 18 at 6 p.m. CT to take on the SEMO Redhawks at Houck Field in Cape Girardeau, Missouri.
"We are always going to be disappointed to lose any game, but we have to build off the momentum from the second half and go into Sunday with our head held high ready to go again."
