Racers Fall To Salukis In Carbondale

Murray State dropped its first road conference match since September 2023.
The Racers fell to the Southern Illinois Salukis, 0-1, on Sunday at the Lew Hartzog Track & Field Complex in Carbondale, Illinois. Sunday's result marks the first time Murray State dropped a road conference match since falling to UIC on September 28, 2023.
Murray State maintained consistent pressure on SIU through 90 minutes of play, taking eight shots in the first half and seven in the second half. 10 of the team's 15 shots were put on goal.
After 25 minutes of play, the Salukis created an opportunity in their attacking third to take the early lead on Maycie Massingill's second goal of the season. Despite conceding a goal, the Racers held SIU to just three shots for the remainder of the match.
Freshman Breece Bass fired three of her four shots in frame for the day, with junior Mary Hardy placing two of her three shots on goal. Morgan Bodker and Ava Roberson each took two shots apiece.
Eight of Murray State's 11 starters saw at least 70 minutes on the pitch, four of which played full time.
Murray State returns to Cutchin Field to open up a two-match weekend at home, starting with Belmont on Thursday, October 3 at 3 p.m. CT in Murray, Kentucky.
Â
Head Coach Matt Lodge on his team's performance:
"I think it's another game that we didn't deserve to lose. I thought we deserved the three points, but we play a cruel sport. We dominated in shots [and] we held them to two shots on target, and you lose 1-0. We held them to two shots in the second half. So, I think we did everything but put it in the back of the net. I think the last three games have shown that we can create chances, but we really need to get over that hump and finish some chances. Because once we turn that corner, I think we're going to be a really hard team to beat."
Â
Head Coach Matt Lodge on if any adjustments will be made to the attacking game plan:
"Nah. Again, I think we're creating enough—I think we're doing enough. It's just—again, we play a sport where the only way to win the game is to put it in the back of the net. We're creating those chances—we had 10 shots on target today, I mean that's a lot in a game of football. I think they're quality chances too, we just have to have some composure and finish our chances and it'll all come together. There's a lot of conference left to play, we've just got to regroup, regather and get ready for Belmont on Thursday."
