The Racers at a big day in Columbia at the Hearnes Center
The Murray State women's track & field team performed well at the Hearnes Center Saturday at the Bob Teel Invitational in Columbia, Missouri.
Having already shown much momentum, the Racers' team of Chelby Melvin, Cheyenne Melvin, Simone Joseph and Kayla Bell shaved more than a second off the school record in the 4X400M Relay with a time of 3:38.49. Cheyenne Melvin is a newcomer to the relay team, while the other three were part of the former record of 3:39.60 set in 2024. The Racers' performance at Mizzou puts them at No. 21 in the nation.
Bell's time of 52.84 in the 400M event produced a win at Missouri, but more importantly, pushed her to a ranking of No. 10 in all of NCAA DI. She certainly pushed for the Murray State record of 52.67 that was set in Stephanie Saleem in 1990.
Chelby Melvin took first in the 60M hurdles at 8.65, as she challenged the MSU record of 8.36 in 2018 by Jabreuna Brimlett.
DiamonAsia Taylor was first in the High Jump at 1.75M and also challenged the MSU school record of 1.80M by Meghan Fletcher in 2023. Taylor took three tries at 1.80M, but didn't make a successful jump for a tie of the MSU mark.
"We are seeing our team make improvements in the energy we bring on meets," said Coach Adam Kiesler. "We had good performances both in the track and in the field, but there is no doubt about, it we had one very special performer. Kayla Bell now sits in the top-10 in the NCAA in the 400M Dash as well as putting down a great 200, which is the best at the moment in the Missouri Valley Conference. We ask a lot of her and she had a great day. To top it off, Kayla anchored our record-breaking 4x400M relay team. Our confidence is growing and I think we're beginning to understand how powerful we can become. We look forward to an off weekend and what the rest of the indoor season has in store."
The Racers' next event is back in Columbia for a second time at the Missouri Invitational (Feb. 7).
